Griff’s First Outdoor Grow Journal

That is my reason for fabric pots. you get the benefit of the water draining to the last free drop while keeping the soil moist and allowing air to get to the roots. Your next soil grow consider it.

I really only saw and understood the benefits of fabric pots after I had already bought mine, but next year I’m seriously thinking about it. :+1:

depending on what I see at the end of this year. I will be able to suggest a pot size. Last year I used 30 gallon pots. this year I am using 7 gallon. these might be too small for photos but are certainly big enough for autos. I will know by the end of this grow when I pull the root ball out of the pot.

Set your journal to watch so I can see how they do. :+1:
I’m hoping 7 gal is a sweet spot for both of us!

Looking good ! It’s all up n up from there @Griff :+1: :v:

Quick update. Plants seem to be doing alright in the big pots. I’ve been letting them dry since transplant since the soil is a touch moist still, but I’ll likely give them some tomorrow morning. I’ve been keeping them under the CFL’s mostly and rotating what plant it sits on, with the LSD seedling under the lights as you can see. Today was the first nice day I could get any sun on them, and I’m going to give them more and more sun the next couple days and hopefully they’re outside for good by next week! :+1:

LSD plants are doing pretty well, I’ll probably be transplanting them this weekend so I don’t make the same mistake as with the wedding cakes…still kicking myself for that.

A question about that mistake though…would you trim the dead leaves? Or just let them fall off? They’re in pretty rough shape. I don’t want to trim anything yet unless it’s recommended for a purpose though. I assume the plant eats those leaves until it’s roots get some good nutes so it’s good to leave them on, just want to make sure…

Also, the LSD plants smell great! Like a nice tasty nug already. Wedding cakes smell much sweeter, not sure if that’s a strain thing or a nutrient thing at this point. Time will tell.

Thanks @jjs, that’s what I figured but best to be sure.

They should love it, I know I am! :+1: :v: :sun_with_face:

Girls are all in pots and outside!

I spent the weekend at the cottage (much needed :sun_with_face:) and had the girls in the sunniest window since Friday afternoon. Gave them lots of water before I left and when I got home this afternoon they were looking happy! Wedding cake’s stretched and the stems got real thick, and also leaned into the sun quite a bit. LSD plants looked pretty happy.

I have some questions for the next steps. I want to top at least one of each plant and maybe FIM one other. I want to keep one natural just as a comparison. I also want to do some LST (per @Oldsoldier1976 ‘s recommendations) but haven’t seen much on outdoor LST results.

Any thoughts on timeline for how I should proceed with these things? Should I top or fim the wedding cakes now? They have more than 5 nodes and they’re settled after the transplant now. Start the LST on them as well now? I drilled some holes around the rim of the new pots but want to do the same for those so LST is easier.

Need to do some research on LST techniques, but I would love advice on schedule for this stuff or anything else!

Thanks :v:

I used to hang clothes pins with fishing weights on them to spread the branches on my guerilla grows :v:

Nice, that’s a different way to do it. I was thinking a paper clip on the plant end opened up so it will hold on then either tying or using a binder clip on the other end maybe for easy adjustment. We’ll see. Need to look up techniques to make sure I’m doing it right before I start anyways…looking forward to it though :+1:

My wife is gonna be pissed when I cut a hole in our window screens …hee :woozy_face:

Hahaha can you just blame it on @Budbrother??

Did you actually try out some screen though? Cover the bottom of a pot?

So I pulled the trigger and topped the healthier of the wedding cakes. Hopefully I did it right! Pics aren’t perfect but you can see if you zoom in where I cut off.

I want to start some LST but after thinking about it I’m not sure how that corresponds with topping/fimming…

Should I wait until the extra growths come in and LST those, leaving the stalks that I have straight? Could I start LST on the LSD plants and then top them in another node or two? @Oldsoldier1976 did you ever top and LST, or did you just LST? What was your method for outdoor? @Chemzdead you mentioned you grew outside…ever do both?

I have some research to do but wanted to pose the question before then…

I’m in uncharted territory for me and the guides online don’t really spell out how to perform these techniques together in an outdoor grow.

Also, family pic of them sitting in the pergola lol…it works perfect and soaks up the last bits of sun, as well as not taking up any more real estate.

Tbh after topping I usually leave them alone for a couple of days till I see growth. That’s just me. You sure can start some LsT if you would like though.

Your plants are still pretty short though, I would prolly just let them be and ensure they stay healthy

Yeah I plan on letting them grow out a bit before doing anything else for sure. And if I started LST it would only be on the wedding cakes and not the smaller LSD’s, though I’ve read it’s alright to start when they’re that small cause they’re easier to work with. But I’m not trying to fill out a grow tent or maximize a light so the more I think about it the more I’m leaning towards just topping and letting that do the filling out, vs LST. But I still need to do lots of reading on the subject before I make any hasty decisions. They definitely seem like they are happy post transplant so that’s a good start!

Figured it was time to do some more chopping.

I decided to FIM my other wedding cake, gonna just let her do her thing from now on. I topped one of the LSD plants, and I’m leaving the other LSD to grow naturally as a comparison. It’s a bit smaller now and the node wasn’t ideal to top so I’m leaving it.

Pics:

WC before and after FIM. Does this look okay…? -

LSD before and after top -

I think I took off the tiny bits of growth at the node (not sure what part they are exactly?) when I topped the last one. Cut diagonally and tried to miss them as best I could this time.

The last WC I topped, growing back slow. -

The LSD I’m leaving natural -

Got cold and rainy and real windy the last couple days so hopefully we can get some nice summer weather to stick around for a while.

I’ve seen you guys in some plant care threads, hope the tags okay. Looking for some help identifying the spots on the leaves in my post above…
