Griff’s First Outdoor Grow Journal

Your soil looks damp :slightly_smiling_face: , so can’t be dry …right ? Guessing heat of your lamps …can you aim a small fan at them on very low setting ? :v:

These are freshly watered and I don’t think I let them dry out too much, but it’s possible. I only have a large fan from about the 70’s so I could maybe put it across the room…or I could look at the small fans I’ve seen on here. Might be worth it. I’ll see how things go this evening/over night and maybe a fan is in the future. It’s good for the stems too right? So might be a good investment either way. :+1:

Yes @Griff , light breeze from the fan is good for the stem . Builds up the strength . High Times brother ! :v:

I think that I have 7 fans going in my 8x8 at the moment. 5 clip on, 1 on the floor and 1- 8" inline drawing air from adjoining bedroom :+1: :tumbler_glass: :v:

Alright, update time.

Wedding cake plants are growing really well despite the crispiness. I believe it was nute burn which may have been cause by me using the kelp in my distilled water, even though I used the tiniest amount. It’s good for root growth so I used it, but I think it encouraged nute uptake which got the girls a bit hot. Old growth hasn’t really got any worse and new growth seems to be okay so I’m not worried, just an ugly start. Next year I’ll definitely be using seedling soil! I also added a fan so I’ve got some decent airflow.

The LSD plants on the other hand are not impressing me. One morning I woke up to one of them completely bent over basically laying on the soil with leaves pointing up. Propped them up with toothpicks and added a bit more soil around the base for support. They are both standing up now so hopefully it was again just a rough start, but time will tell how good the seed genes actually are. :crossed_fingers:

Humidity is also pretty low inside so that’s not helping anything. We had a ground covered in snow yesterday (what month is it again?!?) but weather should be warming up soon, albeit very wet still. I’m going to wait to transplant until I know it will stay warm, then introduce the girls to more and more sun gradually as they recover, then finally get them outside for good! Can’t wait

Another update but I need help this time!

I was watering every day with a spray bottle and making the soil fairly moist (small puddle of water as it soaked it) but I only got runoff once. I noticed the last couple days the leaves starting starting to curl down. I didn’t water the wedding cakes (bigger ones) this morning in case they needed to dry out, and came home to this! :worried:

Any ideas? I’m wondering if it’s a water issue or if maybe they need to be transplanted? I don’t see any roots at the bottom openings I made in the cups. Would they have used up the nutrients from the soil or are they maybe getting burned somehow? I’m using distilled water. I haven’t been PHing so should I water to runoff and check PH/tds maybe…? Help!

I want to transplant in the next couple days because after this rain spell we should have good weather, but I don’t want to risk transplanting when they’re unhappy like this.

On the other hand, the LSD plants have recovered nicely so that’s a positive…I’d like 4 healthy girls though!

Could it be nitrogen poisoning? Or maybe too much heat?

I’m going to take the WC’s out from under the lights as of now. Really looking for some guidance on whether I should transplant ASAP or not!

Should definitely transplant pretty quickly. Those plants are pretty large for solo cups. Especially when they only look to be half full of soil. And the lower leaves make it look like they’ve depleted the nutrients in the soil.

Pretty much my sentiments as well :v:

Thank you! Working on that first thing this morning then. I agree they were getting big for the cups, wasn’t my intention to keep them inside this long but this spring weather really effed up my plans.

Hopefully all goes well with those two! :crossed_fingers:

If the weather isn’t cooperating to put them outside, you could pot up to a gallon pot until the weather is where it needs to be

Weather was cold up until Saturday which was beautiful, but now we are on our second full day of rain. They’ll be okay to go outside the second the sun is shining.

I ended up transplanting them into their final pots. Used the perlite/ProMix herb and veg mixture as I initially decided on. Should be ~30% perlite. Pots are 7 gallons. Roots weren’t to the bottom but the had definitely filled out the cups width wise.

Fingers crossed now :crossed_fingers:

LSD seedlings won’t be too far behind I’m hoping, and I definitely won’t be making the same mistake twice!

You guys helped me get to this point, appreciate it all :v:

Did you water them in a little?

Yep, rinsed the perlite (@Skydiver) and watered enough to settle everything down.

Forgot to mention I did add drainage holes to the pots as well. The thin plastic didn’t make it easy but they’re 1/2” holes, 6 on bottom and 4 around low sides.

Ok good. When I add holes make them smaller but do a lot more of them.

That may have been a better way to go but I was pretty anxious to get them into the pots lol… These pots are sitting inside the other 2 undrilled pots so I can bring them inside without getting soil everywhere, but when I get the LSD transplanted I’ll try it that way. Thanks for the tip :ok_hand:

Another idea I got from @Budbrother is putting a thin layer of perlite at the bottom of the pot before adding soil mix. Perlite that’s been rinsed first.
Fresh soil should perk them up too

I had a similar idea but with stones since the perlite is pretty small and would definitely fall out my holes but also smaller holes as well. Didn’t have any stones around so that will be for another time perhaps.

You could cut a piece of window screen to put in the bottom of the cup first.
