Nice to meet you too @CalamityJane! I’m new here and to growing. Thanks for the feedback, and you too @DPCBassman. These blue dream autos have definitely been tricky to germinate.
I’m trying to avoid spending too much money on lights as I really don’t have much indoor space and these plants will be living outside in a few weeks. I have one of these clamp lights. Wondering if I put a grow bulb in it if it’ll be better than the Amazon LEDs.
Ooh lights are not my fortè… I do know that they don’t need to be particularly powerful for the early veg stage so maybe just give it a go, it’s the only way we learn
The blue dream that did sprout after 8+ days of trying to germinate lost its helmet but doesn’t look so great. Seems to have a little rot on the cotyledons. It’s been like this for about 24 hours and they still haven’t opened up. Not so hopeful. I think this might just be a bad batch of seeds. Considering trying one more or maybe trying a northern lights fem.
Yeah shame that one hasn’t sprouted yet
I’ve no suggestions, sorry…
If it were mine, I’d probably leave the sprouted BD to do it’s thing. Check again in a few days.
For the GG, good going! I see water on those leaves… be careful getting water on them so young and under direct light as I’ve heard/seen it can magnify the light and cause the leaves to burn. Maybe give ‘em a wipe with a soft cloth/tissue. But otherwise, looking good!
I have had good luck soaking for 24 hours at 78 degrees F. I can always see the tail, even if it’s not long. Then into the incubator until the seedling emerges. My seed incubator is just a heating pad (like for a backache), with a metal tray on top, covered by a translucent dome, in my case, a plastic drawer from a discarded crappy storage bin.
I keep this in a north-facing window so it doesn’t get overheated by the sun.
Oh…well…it’s a done deal @BushDoctor .
Yah - it was a mess and I thought for sure that I whacked 'em all in the process.
Performed the separation on 19th ~22:00EST…
It’s not easy to tell which are which in the pic, but as of yesterday 14:00EST these are how they’re looking.
@CalamityJane thanks for the encouragement. I’m not giving up on the BD sprout or seed yet. Definitely will give it a few more days before moving on. I noticed the water beads in GGA too. It’s condensation from the dome (clear plastic container with a few holes punched in it) I’ve been using to give it a little extra humidity since the RH is around 35% where I’m keeping it.
@Oldguy thanks for the tip. No seed membrane keep it closed. I can get a finger nail in between the two tiny leaves. Just doesn’t seem to want to open. Guess we’ll see what happens in a few days.
I was going to do the paper towel method, but I practiced on some other seeds and all I got was mold. I know the paper towel trick works, but I haven’t been able to successfully do it since like … preschool .
I’m in my first grow now. Simply soaked in distilled water for no more than 24 hours, then put it in a root riot plug in a humidity dome on top of a seedling heat pad with thermostat set to 75 and it took off running! If you dont have a heat pad, I’d reccomend it.
Quick update. The little BD sprout doesn’t seem to be growing. I think it’s probably time to move on. I transplanted it to a solo cup to make room for a new seed/seedling. We’ll see.
The third BD seed I had soaked for 24 hours and has been in a damp paper towel for about 5 days or so and it still hasn’t cracked, so probably time to move on from that one too. I germinated a Northern lights fem/photo and it popped in 24 hours and I germinated my 4th BD seed over the weekend and it popped in about 48. You can see the tip of the tap root below but it looks a little brown. Hopefully it’ll be ok. I really think this must be a bad batch of BD auto seeds.
Steprock1 had bad germination rate on the 40 seeds i ordered california. Bananna cush auto you replied said 10 each was gonna be shipped. Or if their not please let me know goin to empty mailbox i driving me nut.
And gorilla glue auto got some more leaves. Any thoughts on the coloration? I thought light stress. I backed the lights up a little but they’re just cheap Amazon gooseneck LEDs to hold me over another couple weeks until these go outside permanently. I do bring it outside for a couple hours when it’s sunny and warm enough, but never longer than 2 hours.
I think it looks ok. Sometimes those early leaves look off but the plant recovers fine.
If you are going to plant outside it will be fine. One of the sprouts looks like it has a bit of the husk still stuck on it. A light touch with a toothpick or tweezers should remove it. Lightly wet the husk and then it should slide off. Never give up on a plant. I have seen them recover from really dire circumstances and become great plants.
The biggest problem I ever had with the clip on lights was the heat, If you use a LED grow lamp heat is not a factor. Different grow lights will emit different spectrums of light. Most grow lights will have a blue/red/white color which which just looks like a “bright white” Blue is for roots and red is for buds, the middle green is for growth. You can also just use blue and red for a blurple color. If you are going to use just a LED bulb look for a daylight bulb. If you are going to grow in a small space I recommend a LED. LED is a lot cheaper to run. If you go with the traditional grow bulbs watch the heat. Now is a good time to experiment. youtube has a lot of good short videos that explains. Just search grow lights for cannabis.
@CalamityJane I know! Poor thing is trying so hard. I’m hoping it pulls through. I don’t really have the space for it but will gift it to a friend if it starts growing and if they’ll take it. I only want two plants and now I’ll have four if this one pulls through.
@Spiney_norman thanks for the tip. Aside from the discoloration I’m not seeing anything else wrong with the GGA. Might stretching a little so I lowered the light again. No husks on any of the seedlings but the unhealthy blue dream in the solo cup has a little rot or discoloration that makes it look like it does.
@Newbienew420 I didn’t ph the water for germinating. I did and a little peroxide for the northern lights and my last blue dream.
@lakelandcat thanks for the advice. I’m experimenting a little with my very amateur temporary setup until the plants go outside (hopefully soon! Had a few days in the 70s recently). Cheap Amazon LEDs for on the GGA and northern lights. Clamp light with a CFL grow bulb I had laying around on my blue dream auto.
