Hello everyone
Pics of some of this year’s grow and probably my last.
I’ve been growing since I was 14, I’m 58 now.
Back in the day I would get seeds out of the smoke I bought. Plant them out in the fields, water, feed, pull males and bring the girls to harvest without any issues.
Last few years I’ve bought seeds online. Different vendors, different stains, autos, feminized, photos. Nothing but issues every year. WPM and or bud rot. They grow in my yard and porch instead of the fields.
This year’s was all Skunk#1 from 3 different vendors. 2 sets of autos, one order of photos regular seeds (supposably genetics from Sam the skunk man) Lie. The autos never even got rained on and bud rot is forming. Those 2 photos that I didn’t even want to walk down to for a pic. One on the left has wpm. Not one of them smells anything like the skunk I’m in search of. They smell great, just not what I’m looking for.
Question is why? Why did the bagseed seeds grow just fine and now I spend hundreds to grow rot and mildew?
I HONESTLY believe all the cross breeding removed the natural ability of the cannabis to ward off issues. Nature spent 100,00 years or more making each strain resistant to growing area issues. We spent 20 years destroying that chasing higher yields and thc. Makes me wonder if just growing good naturally high thc landrace strains outside might be better. Indoors we have some control. Outdoors we do not even though we think we do. Nature does what it wants. Dont give up yet. All the successfull years of growing. Just return to your landrace strains you always grew.
Also if you find some good landrace seeds I would seed the first batch like the old days. Then you are set for life on seeds and can return to culling males…
Totally agree with you on this. Should have left well enough alone. The only reason I’m still growing is in search of that old school skunk. Which I believe was crossed out of existence
Research landrace seeds. There are some breeders who sell those exclusivly. They keep them in circulation. You find that skunk then we will have an exchange offer tendered…lol.
Agree with storm. Landrace. A friend through a friend was able to get his hands on some “landrace” Northern Lights ( not techically a landrace but pure indica crossed with 2 true landraces) and im hoping to pick up a few clones this weekend.
Thanks, I will just have to give that a try. I know I’m not the only one jonesing for some old time skunk either. Whomever can find or recreate that terpene profile is gonna make a fortune. For real, I’ve had friends looking all over in the US. Friend came back from Detroit last week, said I got what you been looking for… It was master skunk and not even close. Nice everyone is trying though.
It’s also legal here in NY now, I’ve gone to almost every dispensary and nada. Some of the older folks know what I’m talking about and agree it’s been breed out.
If I have to try every strain, then damn it I’ll just do it
@Cannabian grows mostly (all?) landrace plants outside, maybe he can offer some direction to find old school skunk. He has recommended therealseedcompanydotcom for landrace seeds.
From what I’ve read and I’m not even sure it is skunk #1 that I’m looking for, that’s just what I’ve been told I’m looking for.
Anywho, it’s not a landrace strain it’s the first hybrid. Acapulco Gold, Colombian gold and
a Afghani indica they say.
Said to have been created by sam the skunk man …Dave Watson . Those two photos are seeds from Tom McCormick who says seeds were in a freezer since the 80"s and are the genetics of sam’s skunk #1. Can’t really say anything as they are photos and just started to flower and the one has wpm soooooo. I’m skeptical and don’t really believe it. I say that because he’s been selling them for a while now and somewhere somebody has to have grown it to fruitation, yet it’s nowhere to be found.
But I’ll try anything
If ur on ig seek Kyle breeder unless he changed names there. But he deals with a lot of landrace strains from 30 plus years back and may have something u seek.
I have some good ol fashioned Afghani seeds still. This is my first year ordering seeds, I planted half and half, just in case the Godfather OG didnt like my soil/climate. But I TOTALLY agree, for the last 5 to 10 years, everyone I know has had mold issues, even people who have grown WAY longer than me, were fighting it. Finally I realized it was because they ALL had clones from indoor plants growing outside, OR they had orderd seeds online. My hope was to get a male out of my old strain and cross of with a Godfather, but of COURSE for the first time in my life, I got ZERO males. . Guess I’ll just have to try again next year.
I agree @Freebud all these seeds i have bought have been nothing but crap compared to the stuff i grew 15yrs ago…and if i knew i could sell 5 seeds for $80+ i would have started a seed bank from all the cross pollination that i did for yrs to get some great buds. The down fall is thats its getting hard to find pure seeds
