First time scrogging

Hey all, I am new here, and asked a question in “Hydro Crunch Lights” had a few responses so I will be tagging them here. @HornHead, @SlowOldGuy, @Oldsoldier1976, @peachfuzz, @DoobieNoobie
I have done so much wrong on this, plants for tent size, heat, to big a planter(can’t move the dam thing especially with the screen in place) lol.
Pain in the butt to water, made a funnel type thing to get the whole pot soaked. Over flow I have to collect enough for testing then use a mighty vac to get it all out of the drain pan…again LOL! AND a whole lot more… see the Hydro Crunch Light thread in Beginner/Basics.
Below is the ticket asked to be filled in
To get an idea of how it started please read the “HYDRO CRUNCH LIGHT” Post.

But…soil temps at one time were as high as 91°f so I took a stainless steel tube bent it onto a U shapr and put it down into the soil attached a shrimp chiller…worked perfectly got soil temp down to 73-80°f on a regular. Not cooler tube not needed to much after AC installed.
    Night: never lower than 72°f
  • Humidity;
    Day: always less than 55
    Night:, same
  • Ventilation system;

6" intake and 4"intake fans with all vents open.
  • AC: yes floor model- the ONLY way I could control heat levels!

    De-humidifier:No not needed yet

Have a hand written journal, too long to retype, will add pictures of it if anyone’s interested.(shows the fight I’ve been having with the heat and the LST.
ANYWAY , this is where were at as of yesterday day 58 since put in soil.
Day 10 since sign of first flower on 6-7
Getting this screen filled was a challenge. I have done so much wrong on this first attempt into scrogging but hopefully they all won’t herm no me but …we’ll see. I have grown before but not to this extent but it sure if fun to see how far Its come in a short amount time.
    Today is a 6.8 ph’d hydrazine(sp?) cal-mag water only 2 1/2 to 3 gal or until run off.
Any and all advice is welcome and appreciated.
    I do have a question…
The lights , at this point what height? There at 18" to 24" from canopy.

Sooo quick question. 3 plants, 1 cup? Errr i mean pot? :joy:

Sorry im not the best at lights. @dbrn32 if he is around may have recs. N have u prune/defoliated in there? Looks kinda tight. At least under the net

Yep, 3 :weary: I have been defoliating every other week but haven’t touched them this week. Once I got things working together they fill out pretty fast… had the lights up to get the stretch, now that they have started i have to keep them so they don’t grow into the lights, I have some tie offs ready if I have to pull them sideways a bit… thanks for the reply… I’ll get a pic of Under the screen and put it up, screen is only 6-8" from the soil .

O and welcome to ILGM.

A quick light google shows your about right in lighting height. And no stretch so ur good there.

Also nice life hack on the temperature control :joy::+1:t5:

 Haha thanks! It worked surprisingly! and thanks for the reply, come so far and a fight the whole way due to the “I’ve read a 1000 pages – yep I Know what I’m doing syndrome”, Lol–Not! I post pictures of the rig after harvest if someone want to make one to battle the soil heat.

The scrog queen is in hiatus. But @blackthumbbetty should know for sure. I think 8 inches is enough. N good thinking. Watch for any light stressing. Things can change quickly. I think all in all sp far so good. Next time, seperate yet equal smaller pots :joy:

Yea, I’m hoping for the best on this one but boy, learning a lot, next time I’ll be a lot better prepared (thought I was this time but …wow) Lol Thanks for the reply!

No problem! And youre doing excellently. Dont beat urself up. Nothing like on the job experience. My first harvest (well documented on here) was -28grams… next one +400gs. Its just learn, listen, n try not to kill em

Hahahahaha Thanks! I’m trying not to!!

Hey looks like they’re doing well. Like purp said first time around just try to make it to the end. A lot of growing is reading the plants and getting a idea of what they want or need based on appearance. And that only comes with time. But so far you’re still doing great. Glad to see you here, there’s no better place to gain knowledge and help than here. As for light height I agree you’re in the right range.

Awesome, Thanks DoobieNoobie, Sure have learned a lot from everyone and so glad to be here! After lights on I’ll get and updated pic for today… when is the proper time to do a BIG trimming any ideas?

Big leafs blocking buds from light,
Large older lower fans,
Little lower buds just wasting energy,
Etc, etc, etc

Also some people think: if youre gonna prune, do it in one big bandaid rip. Dont know why. But i take the most unnecessary then 3-4 days later a few more. Just thru out my grow. Seems less aggressive.

That’s kinda what I’ve been doing, little here little there, did a somewhat of a lollipop after the screen filled out but not much since I got a canopy. I’m gonna go for it sometime this week, hit some big fans by the outer screen frame that need to go but I left them on, as I read to be careful not to remove the wrong ones?? I guess can’t stress them much more than they have been through, they have survived the stripping under the screen pretty well, so they will probably do ok with a good trim.
Thanks for the help!

Remember it’s a weed and will grow like one!

Very resilient and really if you keep them watered and lit they will do something

Thanks PharmerBob for poppin in! I try to be a perfectionist in all I do but it didn’t happen that way LOL. GLAD these are tough ladies!
But it’s my weed… and I’m happy for anything on this one…Next one…
…is gonna be the Bomb!

I don’t plan to ever do big trims. I can’t stay hunched over for very long. So I would agree with purp. A leaf here and there when it won’t stay where I tuck it. Or if it is blocking light from buds.

I agree with @PurpNGold74 and @DoobieNoobie, a little at a time on the the trim, and only take what is necessary for airflow or to allow light to buds (if you can’t just tuck 'em). On your lights, I’d gradually lower them until the plants complain, then raise them just enough until they’re happy. That way, you know you’re giving them the most they can handle, and maximizing the potential of your lighting. :v:

I have found using a light meter. That for all my lights. Weather it is a vipar 300, 450 600 or any of my QBs. 19" on all of them gives me the best coverage for my 24" wide scrogs. For light height. You will almost have to play with your lights to find that out. I have to stay a minimum of 19" away with the vipars or I bur the tops. my QBs can be turned up or down. So I am able to go as low as 8" if needed.
Once I finished 3 weeks of flower, counting pre flower. I start getting rid of the majority of the fan leaves now. I had saw how well some one that this this in the lab was doing an started doing the same.
Your plants are looking great :+1:

No scrog just high and tight bonsai’s

Nothing is ever perfect , truthfully I have a new system and killed and transplanted back a new plant 3 times now… 3rd times the charm I guess? 2 weeks behind the others but it’ll do something when the time comes

Wow yours look great! And that stocks! What system is that? Haven’t seen the bucket lid with a inlet before? I’m gonna try a DWC 5gal soon,

Thanks for the input on this one, first signs of flower was 6/7/19 so this is 11 days in,
In a few days I will do the trim of the fans and covers if i can’t tuck anymore. I’ll try the light down to 18" and see how they do and go from there! Thanks for the help! This place is fantastic, love it here at
I❤GM !
