First grow - Question on readiness and harvesing when buds don't ripen at same time

New grower, about 4 weeks in flower. Strain said 6-7 week flowering time. From what I’ve read and the trichome I think I’m about 2 weeks out.

Unfortunately due to my family hating the smell of bud (what’s not to love about berry funk), I will have to dry in my grow tent when I harvest so I will have to harvest all at one time. My buds are not finishing at the same time, so how should I judge harvest time for the whole crop? Based on the first couple buds or the “average” of them all? I really don’t like couch lock so from what I read you want just a few amber trichome at harvest.

First trichome pic is a more mature one, the second is a more immature one. Looks to me like the first one has mostly milky ones and the other mostly clear?

And if you got this far, I find it odd that for the same variety the buds on the left plant are round and the ones on the right are more “pyramid” shaped… Or is that just a pheno thing?

Welcome @cc014572 to the forum. You’re doing a great job. What’s your recipe for success?? Medium, nutes, lights??
If you want to harvest it all at once heres what I’d do….
Trim from the bottom up all or most of the shade leaves. She has enough juice in the roots to finish up in the next 7 days.
Go with a straight water for the next week and you should be good to chop and hang by day 8.
Nice job so far.
How are you goin to dry and cure??

I am, not the first time growing but “my” first time actually growing all on my own and I must say I’m not sure if I’m doing this correctly because my plants are still pretty small considering how long they have been growing and I don’t know what else to do will someone please help me to just have more success and thicker fuller plants please I feel like I’m doing it all wrong after seeing all these BEAUTIFUL PLANTS! Thank you in advance!

Welcome to the community. Plants look great. I always have all cloudy and 10-15% amber. Good luck harvesting all at the same time. I haven’t experienced your problem yet but I get it, my wife makes comments sometimes about the smell even using a 8” carbon filter. I’ll be following to see how the suggestions from other growers work for you. Congratulations they look great.

You’re a long ways from harvest. They’ll fatten up a lot more. I’d guess closer to 4 weeks.

How much room do you have above your light in your tent? Could you hang plants to cure up above it, then somehow block out as much light as you can? I’ve seen people dry and cure in carboard boxes before. I’ve never had this issue but it could work in a pinch if they dont finish together

Welcome to the community , Congratulations plants look nice and healthy.

Google WeDryer it has a carbon filter that works well in filtering out the wonderful smells this may help with your situation.
I have used them for the same reason to keep the smell down when drying and they work well.

Thanks LateNightGardner.
When I do harvest, I’m going to dry in the grow tent (no lights) remove my heat source and undo the dehumidifier. Since I used to have reptiles, I actually use 2 75W ceramic heaters and they raise the tent by about 2-3 degrees.

Right now in bloom I’m about 28c and 42% rh lights on, 24c 47% rh lights out. If I unplug the dehumidifer and unhook my heaters I’ll get to 20c 50% rh for drying. I’ve read you want the temperature a bit lower but that’s the best I will be able to do.

Looking back, I probably should have taken off some of the lower buds and cut off a lower branch or two. I care more for quality than quantity.

Thanks for the advice!

Thanks Dexterado.
I think I was freaking out a bit since I was noticing a bunch of amber trichomes but I had the microscope on a sugar leaf. lol.

@cc014572 ; your a getN close my friend to chopping time, in my opinion, a few weeks longer!!
Keeping a very close :eyes: on the
Trichomes, I like 70% amber color, and if ya have some ripening quicker than others,
You can go ahead and dry just just what is ready, and for the smell , hey my home SMELLS SKUNKY TOO ! I would suggest
Getting yourself another grow tent JUST FOR DRYING ONLY !!
IT sertanly saved me time, plus
You don’t have to wait for your stuff Drying in your main grow tent !! U can keep on growing!!
Hey A NEW FRIEND, now that’s
Freakn Bad@$$ COOL !!!
AND WELCOME TO THE GANG !

I use 1. Work great. Get a black 1 and hang it anywhere pretty much.

Thanks Storm.

I did look it up. Does it really eliminate the smell also? And how long is the dry time? I read in a few places you don’t want your bud to dry too fast from a flavor/harshness perspective. But I do like that it would give me flexibility to harvest in stages.

Hbrookner2, although I’m the last guy qualified to give advice I’ll just relay my experience with first grow.

When my seedlings got their first leaves, they kinda just stopped and did nothing for like 1.5 weeks. From what I read they were spending energy rooting. I could very well be wrong.

My variety is also one that gets about 3 feet. So it never grew really fast. But when I flipped it to flower it really started to grow fast.

I’ve been using the WeDryer since 2019. Have both sizes. Big one wasn’t available when they first came out. I’ve dried many many many plants using it. The dry time is going to be relative to several factors. What the temp and humidity is where you have it hanging. The girth of you buds.
I’ve also dried plants hung upside down etc when I had an overflow but will use the WeDryer when there is room in it.
Couple things I do is sorting the stems with buds on them by size and putting the biggest thickets on the lower levels and the thinner smaller ones up top. With the airflow it helps slow the dry of the smaller ones so they are closer to being dry with the rest.
They hang in my bedroom closet and there was no smell when the carbon filters are newer and those will need to be replaced every so often so I suggest getting an extra one.
My drying time has ranged from 5-7 days up to 10 days depending on the environment as well as the thickness of the buds at chop.
Nice thing is you can continuously remove ones that are ready for jarring and put fresh cuts into the cleared out chamber/s

If you’re wanting to harvest individual plants as they mature and not all at once and you have to control the smell this is a great option.
It’s an added expense but would do the trick due to your circumstances.

I did a write up about 5 years back on them here…

This write up above was using the smaller one.
The larger one holds almost triple of the smaller one and works the same.

Hope this helps with your situation

Enjoy the day

Ty @Skydiver . Saved me some typing.

Hey, thanks for all the replies. I’m in a much better place about all this now. Glad I found this forum.

Think I will check out the dryer, makes sense and I actually grow a lot of herbs I hang dry and now I can use this.
