First go at Dry Sifting

As the topic says i am going to try my first go at dry sifting. I have a couple ounces of bud that is getting a bit old. I also have maybe the same amount in trim that I have been saving up for a while (keep it in the fridge, not sure if that is a good idea or not.

I purchased two of those round things with screens. A 160 and 75 micron size. I bought a set of three a couple of years ago and never got around to trying it. Can’t find them now, probably will after my news ones come in.

I have been reading a lot of guides lately trying to understand it all but thought I would reach out you fine folks here for some guidance. I understand the basic principle in breaking down the plant matter in smaller and smaller pieces until you have mostly the trichomes left at the end.

Question 1: what is the best way to break down the buds initially for the first sift? Just use my micro shears and cut into small pieces? Would a common grinder help at all? I feel like that would damage the buds way too much and I could end up with a lot of plant matter in the final mix.

Question 2: Is a plastic credit card the best way to rake it over the screen? Anything better I could use?

Question 3: What is the best material to have under the sieves to collect the final product?

I know I have more questions but that will give me a good start.

Thanks!

I use a glass pane.

If you are using a bag, then you can just shake it. Do what you have to do if not.

I have bags and shake them to separate trichomes from plant material. I break the buds up some, but not a whole lot. If you are not using a bag, then it is probably a good idea to break them down smaller.

Freezing your buds before the extraction process will help liberate trichomes from plant material more efficiently.

Thanks for the reply… I am not sure what you mean by using bags, can you explain that method?

Sometimes referred to as bubble bags

Ah. I see. Thanks… looks like we are getting our first bit of cold weather for the year, lows will be in the mid-high 30s (F). So i plan on taking advantage of that and doing it outside.

The filtered product has a consistency of a sticky powder. I’d do it outdoors if little wind is present.

I did think about the wind and have a sheltered area to do use… would be a shame to see it all blow away!
