I’ve got a heck of a good outdoor run going, but not at the point where I wanna pull 'em.
Friday and Saturday night this week, we have an overnight low of 36’F forecast and I’m suddenly panic-y. I’m years past, I’ve lucked out and have not had to contend with a frost. For someone like me, who doesn’t have much time to spare, can anyone offer up any practical advice? Should I consider covering them (I’ve heard bedsheets will work) - is this temp worth panicking over?
Thanks for anything you might be willing to offer up.
I believe I would try covering them with something, bedsheets would probably do the trick, but be very careful with the buds, as you can easily destroy trichomes. I wouldn’t want to take a chance on the forecast, as it can end up colder than the forecast, or even warmer, which would be good. But below 36° I’d want them to be covered for sure. good luck.
Myself I would not worry to much unless a hard freeze is on the way, then to say I am in fab pots so if hard freeze is on the way the get moved into garage or next to it with 3’ over hangs so they do not get full on damp.
Plants can tolerate a frost or two. If it’s prolonged then you definitely wanna take extra precautions.
Cover them up overnight if it dips below 40 and just pull it first thing in the morning so the dew doesn’t create a damp condition for mold. If you’re looking at an extended period below 40 then you gotta adjust your plans a bit and probably harvest.
I’m in Minnesota and we usually have a frost or two before outdoor photo harvest times. There is a thought that the plant will actually produce more trichomes when it thinks winter is coming as a defense mechanism. So the cold can help in the right doses.
If you ran a couple of fans to move air around, 36F shouldn’t harm them. Buckets of water placed at the base of plants will help with a hard frost. Covering with a sheet will help as well.
Personally; if it were my decision I’d do everything to keep them going.
Thanks for the help, everyone - pulled together a good assortment of sheets and light blankets. Was floated to me that I could water and then heavily mulch it, too. Took a peek when I got home - they look amazing - I’d hate to have it all go sideways at the last minute
IMO as long as the frost isn’t to hard you’ll be fine.pics are after getting frosted 2X.Mind you they were very mild .pics are after second frost.Fall colors showed up with the colder temps.
