DWC/hydro 5 gallon bucket advice

Afternoon/ my morning @Retiredoldguy ,

What size tote would I need and equipment to grow 1 auto flower in my 4x4x7ft tent I currently have 300w true in it. And could I use plain coco no perlite mix or anything for the net pods.

I currently have 1 auto an 1 Photoperiod growing in tent but when they are done I was wanting to try DWC to see a difference. I also have a 2x2x5ft tent but thinking about using it to dry.

Would appreciate any an all information I can get so I don’t screw up anything.

Thanks in advance.

@Mmanson1981 I’ve also picked up a manual water pump for changing water an putting nutrients in after mixed.

Hi DanB…if you are going with the bucket grow I would suggest the buckets that have the side chamber built in for exchanging and checking nutrients…

I still want to use a tote but would need the bucket for mixing and refills, figured while this entire setup is cheap why not.

I could also drill a hole in bucket get a grommet a corner and some tube for fill lvl and testing

So question… i started my seeds in soil while waiting for my net pots and pumps… when i go to transplant i can just rinse off the soil and send it into the dwc correct

Good question could I put my clay pebbles in the coco on top and start my seed like that then transfer to hydro when roots are pushing through?

@Mmanson1981

So I decided to put 4.5 gallons of water in bucket ran air pump, put clay pebbles in and covered with coco, I planted a white widow auto straight into the coco.

Providing what I’ve read is right the roots should be able to grow through the coco into the basket and through the clay pebbles.

I have seen some do this and be successful…

@Retiredoldguy with the information I’ve provided am I correct with what I’ve read about the roots growing around and through the clay pebbles

yes your roots will find their way thru the pebbles…

I did 4.5 gallons at 5.7ph and 850ppm. Bought a pump to add and removed water.

Hey ROG, new here, read a good bit of your stuff, not sure where to post a new thread so I hope I’m not highjacking this one.
Getting ready to run my first rdwc, I see the more experienced growers use totes over buckets.
I’m thinking of following the recommendations for 20 gal totes with 8” inserts with clay pebbles. 1 plant per tote-gonna scrog two maybe three side by side in an trailer compartment-4x8x7.5’
What size pump/chiller and air pump would you recommend?
I was going to use buckets for space but it seems the consensus is totes. I go big or go home. I’d rather invest it all right the first time and learn from there.

Welcome to the forum the best way to get someone’s attention is to tag them using “@” so to get Rog it’s @Retiredoldguy @Phoenix17 the forum opens up more and gets easier to navigate. Best of luck in your RDWC

hey @Phoenix17 I can help you understand your nutrient and plant phases but I do not run external pump and chiller… I do agree the totes are much better than the buckets for several reasons…let me look around a bit and see if I can find someone who runs RDWC…
found this…
110 max gallon DIY RDWC
13 Gallon buckets with 8" net pots
3" drainage + 2" bypass drain
1/2 HP Chiller
Fluval FX6 900 gallon aquarium canister filter
Pump bag prefilter over 3" main drain line in res
Compost bag used as res pump(s) prefilter
6 - 500 watt Spider Farmer LEDs
2000 GPH Recirculation Pump
900 GPH Chiller Pump
Blue Labs Guardian PH/TDS meter
2700 GPH aquarium air pump
55 gallon resivor

Thanks! You’d think for 32 I’d be more capable on a forum lol

Sweet! You rock! Thanks!
The reason for the chiller consideration is that they will be inside a trailer. I’ll have to have ventilation obviously but summer gets to be 90-105 anymore.
So your Dwc, I guess that’s indoors with climate control?

So what kind of yield do you see doing 12 in that tote instead of one? Will you scrog them?

I believe to get the full potential from a plant she must not be crowded…so I only grow one plant in each tote…

I am loving the dwc set up. I use 5 gal bucketd for now. Might switch to a rdwc next grow
