Dehumidifier water like distilled water

Anybody ever use water from dehumidifier on plants? It should be similar to distilled water. Just tired of lugging water up the steps to dump.

I’ve seen others on here do it. I checked the TDS of what came out of mine, and I’d never use it for anything. I’d say check it for yourself and see. I’m sure not all dehumidifiers are created equal.

Can’t imagine “clean” water runs off from this though…

It was good to see… I pulled both of mine apart after that

Do you use RO? If you do, could you run a 1/4" icemaker line upstairs with a holding tote and a float?

I’ve seen people state that they consider it to be similar to RO or distilled. It’s been a few years, but I do remember that the demumidifier water I tested was no where near <50 PPM.

Good info, guess I’ll keep tossing it out.

I buy distilled water for 1.09 a gallon at Menards. Only have 2plants going so it works out.

I use my dehumidifier water. Comes out at like 7ppm. When I mix Jacks and Silica (coco grower) my pH hits 5.9 or so and about 900ppm

That’s gotta be expensive over the course of a grow. Are there any water fillup stations in your area. When I dontrun the dehumidy, I fill up 5 gallon bucket for $1.50.

I personally use my dehumidifier water i also use a UVC light to sanitize the water before using it

I use dehumidifier water with no ill effects. During the summer my dehumidifier collects about 8 gallons of water a week that I don’t have to process through a RO filter. Saves a lot of effort.

My dehumidifier pumps water to a 12 gallon reservoir so I don’t have to worry about it shutting itself off when full.

Yeah. I went to RO after a few months of buying distilled.

I use my dehumidifier water anytime I have some. Almost all my watering last grow was from dehumidifier water.:v:

I’m sorry for asking this, but what’s wrong with the tap water? Honest question.

@Bamarayne If you get past the chlorine, chloramine, fluoride, etc., then tap water may or may not be ok to use. Plants can only handle so many salts (TDS), and some people have tap water with a pretty high content of TDS. RO or distilled, is water stripped of any dissolved solids, and makes it a clean slate to “build” a nutrient solution with. Well water can have the same net effect, only for different content reasons (high iron, calcium, sulfur, etc). The kicker, is that after stripping everything from the water, not only do you add the normal nutrients, but supplemental calmag also needs to be put back into the water. Seems counterproductive, but the grower knows exactly what’s in the water then. Some people mix tap/well with RO. I did that for a while, but went back to straight RO, as it was easier to plumb to a res tank float.

Both my dehumidifiers are set up drain to waste, and the gunk that plugs up my lines is not something I’d put in a hydro system… maybe for soil it would be fine, but unsanitary water in a hydro system is a recipe for disaster imho. My central air drain line (which is just another source, same as a dehum) was so gunked this summer it started backflowing onto the basement floor before I caught it. It must be air quality somehow, but not really sure why some people get clean water out of a dehumidifier and some don’t.

@Bamarayne Actually, after this last bong rip settled, I realized that you were probably just asking @Adam1jam what’s wrong with his tap water, not tap water in general… sorry for the ramble, my bad

Those pics of the dirty coil is my dehumidifier, but dirty coils don’t mean dirty water. I’ve been using my dehumidifier water for my plants for many years now with no issues or problems. And ever since I discovered the dirty coils, I take them apart and clean them every six months or so.

I use straight tap water, my TDS is 140 with a PH of 7.1. I’ve never let it set either :love_you_gesture:

Actually, you answered the question exactly as i needed. Thanks.

That’s interesting. I never would have guessed. After seeing yours, I pulled mine apart and they weren’t bad at all. Maybe mine needs to “season” more before I get clean water out of it

I have 3 cats that shed a tremendous amount and hang out with me in the grow room all the time. I’m sure that is the number one reason my dehumidifiers coils were so bad, along with the fact that I ran them for years without realizing that the coils needed to be cleaned.

For sure… I mean I cleaned the filter screen in the back pretty religiously, but never really thought about the coils themselves, and enough got by the filter that I could see how left unchecked, they could get pretty bad.
