I’ve purchased a bag of coco loco and the full 5 bag set of Jacks nutrients. This will be my first grow using any coco coir. I’m figuring it to be sort of a transition to coco/perlite next grow if I like it. Any help or tips from growers with experience with these two together would be very well appreciated. Like pH and how that may change as the Jacks is increased after the first 3-5 weeks etc…
I’m tossed between 3 or 5 gal fabric pots right now. Ive got 2-5s that seem too wide in our 20”x36” tent. I’m planning on 2 Hariquin Kimbo kush 1:2 plants, and one Cream and Cheese CBD 1:1.
You’re going to want a lot more space for 3 plants
I dont like the coco soil mixes.
Its not soil and its not coco.
They require different strategies.
I believe you treat it like soil, with the exception of it may hold moisture better then just soil…
If you want to try coco, just go all in.
70% coco 30% perlite.
Foxfarms makes a cultivation nation 70/30 mix or mix your own.
With coco loco (or any coco with organic mater “aka soil”, you are still going to have to keep up with ppm of run off. .
With just coco perlite, no more testing runoff at all unless theres a problem.
Dive in head first my freind, the water is fine!
Thanks @Borderryan22 , I know, I got way with it last grow by moving the 3rd plant outside and just finishing 2 in the tent. I’m thinking 3gal pots is my best bet and move 1 outside to finish flowering. We got 9+ oz with 200w.
Thanks @1HappyPappy , but the bag cost $35. I’ll consider going with full coco as you say but 1. I hate waste and 2. I love learning. But perhaps you make some good points. I don’t really have a problem with staying on top of runoff numbers. Last grow was super soil / peat moss and I checked pH and runoff constantly. Saving my blunders for other issues.
Yeah definitely use what you got for sure
I see that @Smooch530 did a grow with coco loco and Jacks… Hope to hear how that fellow New Yorker did. But Ido have the coco and perlite so… I’ve got time to formulate a plan.
As @1HappyPappy pointed out Coco Loco isn’t 100% pure coco coir. It’s approximately 60% coco and 40% aged forest products. Foxfarms recommends PHing at 6.0 ,but it is amended with worm casings and other amendments. You should be fine for a couple of weeks before starting Jack’s. You may want to take runoff ppm’s before starting Jack’s, to be sure that it won’t burn your ladies up.
Thanks @Bulldognuts for your interest. I guess I’m having a bit of trouble leaving behind soil. Gardening in soil for 45 years is what I know best.
Now some suggest a pH of 6-6.5 with Coco loco which sounds reasonable to me, no?
And ppm after a few weeks, perhaps…-500 would you say?
6-6.5 would likely be fine I use a 50-50 mixture of Coco Loco and Ocean forest. Once ppm’s drops to 1000 or lower, I start full strength Jack’s without a problem. After I start nutrients, I water full strength with every watering.
Coco loco. Is great and I’ve had several great runs using it. Like all mentioned with it being a soil and aged Forrest floor blend. I ran it in auto pots and PH of 5.9-6.2
Great info @Bulldognuts , We ran @1200-1500 ppm run off in flowering, in super soil with success last grow. Which seems to confirm your advise. Thanks.
Yes OGI, thanks for the pH info. I was not so concerned re my shitty Chinese pH pen but transitioning to coco, I’ll have to get a better one.
Yo @Bulldognuts , Jacks full strength every watering; I’m with you in this if it doesn’t burn them. I don’t like the flush every 3weeks thing. If you do that you may as well just go full coco! No? just testing my understanding before I start this new grow. Also I’m thinking higher light intensity may allow one to pump up the nutes more than 50% so I’ll be cautious, with only 200W, right?
I am growing two plants in coco with jacks. Both in 3 gal fabric pots. I have a 3x4 tent and its full. Too full in fact. I could have just grown 1.
Very nice! Yea I’m hedging my bets, germinating 3 and hoping for 1or2 good ones.
Ya know, I’m considering 1 pot with coco/perlite, and 1 or 2 with the coco loco. For a learning experience.
If they are photo period plants just grow them under 12/12 schedule from day 1. You can keep them in check by some training and pruning. Make good use of your space without crowding.
There is one great grower here on the forum that grows all his photo period plants under a 12/12 schedule all the time.
I suggest sticking with the same soil in all 3.
You are asking for problems having to deal with different soils at the same time.
I’m considering going to coco on the next grow. Are the growth rates remarkably good in coco?
That’s a new one for me. Total 12/12, Wondering how they grow, smaller?
Yes I’m a pruner, trainer, super cropper etc… have to say to self
“step away from the pruning shears”.
Yes. Its very fast.
Set it up so you can remove the runoff easily. The only problem I have is buildup from not watering with enough runoff to keep the ppms down. Its totally me being lazy, but otherwise a great system.
