Cmh lights for tent

So after talking to a few people I going to get a smaller tent. The 2x4. Can’t afford to light a 4x4. Everyone told me not to get blurp lights or hps. So out of these two lights which one will light 2-3 plants

Is a 3x3 not an option? It’s slightly larger than 2x4 and much better space if you’re planning on running a 315 cmh.

The 2 tents I looked at was a 48x24x60 and the other was 48x48x80

I use the vivosun 315w but I got a bigger hood for it and also cut the wires and put the ballast outside of tent because it gets pretty hot itself

Plan on having a air filtration system inside of the tent along with fans

315 isn’t shaped for a 2x4 and not big enough for a 4x4.

I didn’t know they made 3x3 tent. So with that tent and that light I should be able to grow 2-3 plants??

Here is my 20inches by 36inches tent filled with 1 plant. You can do 2 plants but itll be tight. I know @imSICKkid grew 2 in a 3x3

And that’s with one cmh light?

You can grow 12 plants in a 3x3 if ya wanted to. It’s all about growing style and the method you use. More plants equal less veg time so you can turn over crops faster and still get the same amount of bud you would get scrogging out one plant.

I agree with @imSICKkid, you can run a bunch of plants in it if you want. There are several members here that do it, and are plenty successful. 4 is pretty good number though, just don’t veg them out unnecessarily long.

Yes. a 315w will cover a 3x3 great. But falls a little short in a 4x4. In a 4x4 you would want a 630w light

Yes sir…my 4 plant deal I got going on has been awesome. I veg for around 5 weeks from seed…flip em, and have consistently gotten around 4 to 5 ounces per plant. So essentially I’m clearing around 16oz every 4 months give or take per 3x3 tent.

I got one plant that yielded 3.34 oz and the second yielded 11.36 oz. the one I pulled early wasn’t weighed. Now my last plant should yield at least 1 lb dried, cured and no stems when she finishes. In a 4x4x80” tent.

But my grow style is way different. :+1:

I’ve grown anywhere from 9 plants to 1 plant in a 3x3. I’ve done 9 in 3 gals pots sea of green of style, I’ve done 4 plants (topped and sometimes SCROGed) in 7 gallon pots, and I’ve done 1 plant in a 20 gallon pot.

As imSICKkid said, more plants = filling up the tent quicker, makes for shorter overall time from seed to bud. I do 4 plants at at time because I do a perpetual grow which makes me veg for 8 weeks while the girls in the flower tent finish doing their thing. So that gives me plenty of time to top the girls in veg and get them ready for flowering.

Just personal opinion but I’d rather have a 600 watt HPS than a 315 CMH even in a 3x3 (as I do). Yes the CMH has a slightly better spectrum and is slightly more efficient but the 600 watt HPS will out-yield a 315 CMH by a good margin because tons more light from the 600, been there, done that. Now a 630 watt CMH and we’re talking but for the price of that you could get 2 600 watt hps lights or getting close to the cost of the good led lights. Also CMH can be more difficult to cool as they don’t have as many air-cooled hood options of HPS and they like to stick that ballast right on the light reflector rather than a remote ballast like the HPS to keep ballast heat out of the tent.

Summary - I’d take an air cooled 600 watt HPS with remote ballast over a non air cooled 315 CMH ballast stuck on end of reflector every time, easier to cool and yield much more.

They don’t make air cooled hoods for cmh because the glass blocks the uva or ovb. I can’t remember which. And you’re correct about the ballast being attached. I unbolted mine and added about 5’ of wires to keep the ballast out of tent. Since then my temperature stays around 75-80. Everything I have read says the 315 cmh is more efficient than a 600w hps. I never used hps so I can’t say if it’s true or not.

More efficient per watt yes, but a 600 watt HPS puts out a lot more usable light than a 315 watt CMH, which translates to more yield and I have no problems keeping a 600 watt HPS in the 70’s temp range.

600 is definitely more light than a 315, but par density is way higher than need be too. When you start figuring actual power draw from a 600 with duct fan for cooling, it may produce more. But it’s not going to produce 2.5x more, which doesn’t justify paying for 2.5x the power.

Anything is going to be better than what I have setup now. I have 3 100watt LED light bulbs from Walmart and a blurp LED light bulb. So far things look to be ok. But this is my first griwt
