I was wondering if it’s possible to cut the major branches/buds when it’s time to harvest and let the smaller underneath vegetation grow longer to get better buds?
Yes you can. Staggered harvests are great for when the plant is maturing branches at different times.

Absolutely you can harvest the large colas on top and let the smaller stuff ripen for a week to 10 days. Snip spots I like to dab a little honey to seal off leakage.
