I’ve discovered to my horror some crusty brown, dead looking buds on my plant. It’s a squat, dense polyploid auto. The ventilation / airflow is good (imo), temps 20-22, RM 50-55. These buds are those just below the cola. Damn. What is this, and what can I do? This plant is more or less ready for harvest, I was gonna chop this weekend. AHHHH!
There’s a fluffy kind of whispy matter on the back of the buds, that feel like they would just easily detach if I pulled them. This white matter is also on the stem. GAR!
That does not look good. Pull that brown one off and look inside.
What does it look like? Is it gooey or is there a worm?
The first photo looks a bit suspicious with regard to mold but I could not tell for certain. Could be dense trichomes.
Thanks @merlin44 . Here’s a slightly better photo. The buds look/feel dry to me, not slimy… and not SO easy to remove, as I first imagined. I’ll take one off in a mo and see what’s inside (ew! nothing, I hope!).
I should say that quite remarkable whiteness on the inner/underside is probably caused by a bad flash light I was using. More recent photo is one I took after removing plant from tent and shining a small led lamp on it. Soz!
Unless super advanced, the buds will be dry and crispy on the outside.
Is that whitish stuff web like? Looks like severe mold and bud rot.
I have had this happen a couple of times over the six years that I have been growing. I threw it all away. It was nasty.
Many folks, especially those low on stash, will remove all of the affected buds, then perform a peroxide bud wash.
Ok, so I removed those three buds. Their sugar leaves were totally healthy looking, and the stems were correct as well. Just the buds themselves seemed very brown and dry. Not a lot of moisture in there, but no worms or anything slimy. They were quite crumbly, with some whiteness fuzz in some places… including on the main stem, which also looks discoloured to me. Does smell at all unusual… I’m low on stash, so what’s that now about peroxide?
Mix a cup or two of hydrogen peroxide with 5 gallons of water and rinse the buds. I rinse all of my buds.
I think that @Myfriendis410 or @kaptain3d may have a video link that they can post for you. You also use the search bar to find it on the forum. It has been posted many times over the years.
Thanks @kaptain3d. I have done it both ways that you posted.
Either way works great.
Do a thorough bud wash to kill off any mold spores at harvest time. You don’t want to ingest that crap.
What would y’all recommend I do now? Rushed out and bought some hydrogen peroxide. I’ve looked at the other buds and don’t SEE they are affected. Harvest asap, wash the buds, and then dry… But how might I try to find out if other buds have been affected?
I would hit the white spot on the stem with some rubbing alcohol to make sure its not going to spread
Literally also just read about this was about to get up to go do it! Thanks for the advice, @Smokesdaily! I’m going to wash the plant and try to harvest asap. What do y’all reckon? I’d planned ot harvest on weekend, but…
When you chop fill a 5 gal bucket with water and add a bottle of peroxide to it. Submerge the stalks and thoroughly soak them. Then rinse with plain water. Drip dry. Some growers do 1 to 2 more buckets with other mixtures but I don’t do those. I’ve saved a few plants doing this.
How much do ratios matter? You say a bottle of hydrogen peroxide, @Fieldofdreams (thanks for advice and the HOPE you’ve given ,e that all’s not lost!!!) but I’m worried about over/under doing it. The video that @kaptain3d posted above (thank you growmie!) says 200-250ml/6-8oz of 3% H2O2 per 5 gallons of water. I’ve got 11,9% H2O2 (basically 12% for maths purposes). So that means 50-62.5ml per 5 gallons (i.e., 1/4 of full dose of 3%)? That’s hardly a bottle! And I don’t want to, um, “bottle it” (i.e., **** it up) as the Brits say. I appreciate y’all.
I buy the 3% here at CVS or Walgreens and it’s that brown bottle, off the top of my head I can’t remember how much liquid is in the bottle. I’ll have to look.
LOL I just dump some in there and call it good. If it is 3 or 4 gallons or 5. It is not critical. I am not stingy when I dump it in.
Haha, ok, whatever works!
