What par/ dli meter do you have @BigCat420 . I have a cheap 30$ lux meter and it’s time I get what I actually need and get one . Do you have one you can suggest my brother?
Been excited to see this one.
Depends on your budget. Apogee is gonna be your top tier but i personally use the photobio by phantom

@matty777 thats a good choice on breeder. Ive heard a lot of good things about tiki madman and thats one of the people my big guy went thru for his clones to make mother plants for his grow room which was like 50 plants at a time. Dude was his own supplier lol always had some dank stuff too. He talked highly of mephisto, tiki madman, and exotic genetics
That’s about what I was looking to spend I just wanted to make sure I got one that was recommended by a friend who uses one such as yourself .
Exotic genetics are on nasc. Been looking through those seeds . One of the seed cultivars I’m considering pheno hunting. Though I really like ethos . That end game I grew ended up true top tier flower . I have friends trying to buy it off me constantly. It’s that good. All 3 seeds I popped ended up great . So I’ll def be pheno hunting ethos genetics in the future.
@Newt keeps small mothers too. He’s very good at it.
@repins12 has done some breeding as well.
It involves lots of patience and good record keeping.
Germinate several seeds from a strain, and mark each plant. Cut the clones from each and mark each clone corresponding to the plant that it came from. Flower out one clone of each and decide whether it has the characteristics you’re after. Axe them periodically when they don’t make the cut. Rinse and repeat.
Thanks for the advice @Graysin i knew you’d know the direction to point @matty777 in. So I’ve been smoking that gelato i just finished drying and tastes absolutely amazing. Even tho it just finished drying and is only 2 days into cure its super smooth, amazing taste of skunk and cake batter, and leaves you feeling like that 70s show when kitty and red find the group smoking and confront them upstairs and their heads all start floating around. I start to feel it in my cheek bones then it will creep up thru my face to my eyes and end in the back of my head making it feel super light. So far my taste testers have all approved and said its my best yet! Also ordered the levo C friday to use up that sunset sherbert we blended up wet and tossed in the freezer for edibles. Really hoping its better built than the levo 2 as that one had fragile components that weren’t replaceable but very much needed for the machine to function. Mainly talking about the lid lock mechanism and hinge thats why i went to a levo c this go around
@Newt @Graysin . Do any of you have any suggestions for literature to read on learning how to keep bonsai mothers?
@noddykitty1 knows how @matty777
Thanks for the tag @GreggT. I will have to read back and make sure I answered the question. I am not up to date on this thread.
I have kept them in 4” veggie start pots and 2” strawberry start pots. Both seem to work well. Hehe I put a strawberry starburst into a strawberry pot; always makes me chuckle.
The trick is to hack roots too, and not just the tops. I hack the tops down to 1 node (aggressive hacking) after they reach the lights. {side note: This is a good way to estimate stretch monsters vs low growers during Bansai. Some need it everyweek, some only 1-2 times a winter.} Then 48 hours later I slide the root bound mass out of the little pot and cut it in half horizontally with the scissors. I will pack it with some fresh soil after the root chop.
Things to look for: hermies. Root binding is a great way to identify and cull hermies early on. Sexing, seeding after sexing, and reveging is great on Bansai. They switch back to veg quickly being Bansai with less plant mass. Much quicker. I like to pollinate at sexing, cull the males, reveg, harvest seed, then plant the reveged top. That’s it in a nut shell. Here is my rarely read thread in detail about what I do. More or less.
Sorry about all the curse words, was made before I knew the rules. I am a potty mouth.
Anyone do seed runs in the winter?
@matty777 here is your answer.
I have kept my jillybean cut (2006) and Durban poison (2007) cut going strong this way. Acquired from the since killed by legalization seattle growers collective.
Bansai winters, spring put outdoors, cut clones from preflower august 1st, finish big crops under sun. Chuck pollen on my Bansai keepers and seedling all winter long. Some years I go nuts with it. 10+ seed runs if you throw some outside too in a hoop house.
Thank you for the information @noddykitty1 and I’m very grateful there is someone so experienced in keeping bonsai mothers here on the forum as that’s exactly what I’m trying to do gather and keep genetics. I’d like to have 4 but I’d be thrilled with 3 killer phenotypes that I could run. The first one I’m buying from King Kong clones ( tiki madman genetics ) this is a way for me to get a top phenotype in my guarded while I pheno hunt the rest of my mothers. Now when I receive the clone I want to grow it out into a mother and root a full round of clones to throw in my veg tent. I don’t have any space besides closet space as I have a 4x4 veg tent and 5x5 flower tent in the room. So until I get a house(hopefully soon) I’m keeping my genetics as bonsai mothers in the closet. Hopefully I can just use a t5 light.
@BigCat420 . I just noticed I’m posting so much on your thread I apologize! I will start discussion on my own. Thanks brotha
Sorry, no. I just trim mine to keep them the size I want, not Bonsai per se, but sort of Bonsai-like… But if you really want to do a bonsai, search for Cannabonsai.
Haha your all good @matty777. Its funny you say that tho because my moms husband just gave me a book on bonsai trees yesterday and how to pot and plant them and told me he wants a bonsai pine tree in a couple years im like sheesh you got high hopes for me lol. We already have the bonsai wire too ironically because we tried to use it for LST
Dude let’s all get some bonsai mothers going.
Lmao ive thought about it!
Do it, we can share genetics. They sell clone slips that you can mail.
