Best Air Temperature for LEDs 78° or 83°?

I just stumbled across this article that California Lights has on their website. I am concerned about the heat levels inside my grow space (4×4×8 tent) i am struggling to keep it at 78° but, this article is claiming that since i am using LEDs instead of Sodium Halides that i should run the temp at 83°- 85° because LEDs do not produce Infra-red and that the surface of the leaves are a 4-7 degrees offset and will be too cool with air temps of 78°. What should i do, raise my air temps to achieve or make up for the offset?
Heres the paragraph I’m talking about. Any intel will be appreciated. Thanks

I run LED’s and try for 78F but don’t get concerned until temps get over 83F. I find that I get a better terpene profile at the lower temps.

Thank you and a very true statement from my observations from my first grows harvest. I noticed, even during the drying phase that there wasn’t much odor. Still not much odor at 3 weeks into cure. This is because my temps were in the upper 80’s throught lights on the entire flowering phase. So, this grow, my 2nd attempt, i understand now how important it is to keep the temps below the 85°threshold. I mean way below. I am not letting it get above 82° this time. Your darned right when you say the terpenes are better at 78°…

Is it a little different in veg? Is it okay if its a little hotter in veg so that i can save on power consumption a little? Can i run veg a little higher than 80 to 82 degrees?

I don’t worry about temps in veg. Especially with a 16 or 18 hour day. I’m in a dry climate and it’s almost ideal environment in my grow room in the basement. Due to the high elevation and dry climate I don’t have to worry nearly as much about WPM either. So normally I run around 60% RH in flower until the last couple of weeks: then I run a dehumidifier.

So, i can back off on the AC for right now and it won’t hurt them? It gets up above 86 degrees without it…will it be fine? The humidity is around 60% give or take 5%

During veg you should be fine.

Thank you! They’re still seedlings just hitting veg…right now…

@MartyMarajuanaseed my veg room will get up to 86 sometimes, it doesnt bother em a bit. Just keep a check on needing water…

Okay great! I cut the air off and it rose to 87 pretty fast and hovered around 88-89 degrees.
I’m running 2 lights in a 4×4×8 tent, the HLG 320 Rspec FR and 700 Rspec FR at about 50 percent on the dimmer. I am around 4 feet from the canopy. Sound about right?

Hey, i just want to thank both of you for the intel. This is going to save me money in the long run. Not only this but i can save my equipment some running time so i can really nail it come flower in a month or so from now. My last grows harvest suffered heat stroke, i lost all my terpenes. I was getting a burnt rubber odor at first and couldn’t figure out why. I have very faint smelling flower from it. Live an learn… but, i am ready this run. I just ran my new AC unit for the past week and was holding it at 78° 60-70%rh during lights on. At least i have a good understanding of how its going to operate now.
I might have to delete the humidity come flower but, its not going to be an issue. My lung room stays around 35- 45% rh in the winter.
So if you wonder what buds would smell like from being under too much heat, thats it, a burnt smell mixed with old rubber thats been kept in a humid climate for 30 years…lol

Have you tried dimming your light and lowering it or is that going to mess up your spread?

No, i guess i could drop it lower but i am pretty close now. Then i could dim them lower so they dont run so warm. I got you…

Thanks, becamy frame of thought was, by having them higher up about 5 feet away that, that would keep the canopys at a decent temp but its the opposite. I just dropped them another good 2 feet and have the lights dimmed to about 45%. Temp got up to 92 degrees before. Now its lioking luke its rounding off near 87 at least. It got hot in there!

Ive got mine cranked right now and they are as high as theyll go… im trying to cover a 12x8 though. Just a few more weeks! Plus temps are supposed to dive next week thank jeebus

Yes, i am counting on that too… temps are dropping. Yaahoo…yeah, i just have to learn how to work my lights better. Its like anything else. Theres a meathod to using these LEDs with a dimmer. They can be manipulated to fit your personal grows space…

Time to get an IR temp gun. Look for around 93 efficacy or adjustable, or at least know what it is & do the conversion.

You can check your leaf temps & calculate your leaf temperature offset, monitor your bud temps, make meaningful VPD calculations, etc…
