I’m curious about methods of backup hangers and general safety around proper hanging of lights, fans, and filters. Especially when hung in grow tents.

Welcome to the group. Interesting question…I have never had one drop on the plants in the tent…but did have one plant smashed by something when I had it out of the tent. Have not heard about too many accidents…but a back up for the light could be something I could see. I am just very careful
Interesting topic. I just set up my first tent and can already tell im going to have to come up with a solution for all the wires. I also have 3 floor stand lights on tripods that I use to supplement light to the lower buds. Ive been a bit worried over them getting knocked over since I got them. they are Led but get pretty hot so i even worry over potential fire hazard if they fell over. I may end up shelving and not using them just because of this worry
One rope hanger carabineer hooked through solid aluminum on each of the four corners of the light. Odds of all four rope hangers failing is basically nil. You can use bungee cords as backups for the exhaust fan and filter if they’re inside your tent. Get in a weird spot and there isn’t much you can’t do with duct tape.
I think when it comes to safety in grow tents is a real concern specially for people who do dwc and rdwc but even for the people that grow in soil we still have drip trays ,all power boards should be mounted outside of the tent but if you cant mount them outside ur tent then zip tie it to a pole inside ur tent keeping it off the floor the last thing anyone wants is to be electrocuted because of a bad choice .As for inline fans u can mount it outside ur tent and just have the carbon filter in ur tent that should be held up by straps ur light should be held up by ratchet straps you get with ur light and those straps should be hung on ur hanging poles at the top of tent inside its all about thinking smart

Welcome to the community. Ive personally never had a light fall, but i know people who have had it happen wether it was from adjusting light height and it slipped or just half azzing things. Imo though, id almost rather it be a light than a large carbon filter if i had a choice id pick neither
Thanks all for the conversation so far. Agreed, this is one of those things where it’ll probably never happen. But if it does, you wish you thought about it a little first!
I currently have carbon filter hung with the traditional straps, fan hung with two ratcheting carabiners to tent beams, and lights hung with two ratcheting carabiners to tent beams.
I’ve seen people make backup hangers of chain or bungee cords for fans, not sure I’ve seen anything for lights but I imagine people do something similar out there.
This came up in a thread a few months ago after someone had a light drop on the girls.
The consensus was something as a safety backup would be prudent. Finding the possible failure points and addressing them is good. My lights hang on double hangers so if one fails the light might drop some but not hit the plants.
Most hangers wont break under the weight of lights, but if bumped the hooks on some might pop out of the loops. Some attention to those kind of things is about all you need to do.
Most of the accidental dropping of lights and other equipment I’ve seen on forum has been a result of improper hanging or just outright dropping while trying to hang something from cross-members at top of tent. I use ratchet hangers and have never had one fail yet.
Also fasten extension cords to the floor outside the tent so they wont get tripped on or pulled. Same thing with ducting if across the floor. If there’s a cord’s outlet in the tent, tie it up off the floor, no plugs on the floor in case of a big watering mistake. I use rope or whatever’s around, tied to upper corners of tent through light cables, in an X pattern, if cables break the rope will catch the light. If your setup is drawing 1000W don’t run a shop vac at the same time without knowing your breakers. Oh geez all the stuff that could go wrong…!
I totally agree 1 hanger per corner on larger lights. I had a hanger break and a 550r FLATTEN 2 auto. Flat as a pancake. Saved them sorta but all my lights are hung with 4 now.
I had 1 break. Light fell hard and other snapped. Was using 2. Were on light rails. Always moving.
Great tips. I’ve always used the little crimped wire things that connect the two on each side and just use two ratchet hangers. Using one on each corner is a much safer idea in the case of a ratchet failure.
Copy on the light rails, I can see that in those circumstances it would be prudent to have back up safety measures. I use PLC light strips on linear aluminum heat sinks with drivers mounted outside, really lightweight. Only movement is occasional adjustments up or down, if I ever have a ratchet break I’ll probably be slapping my forehead, thinking dammit I should have had backup safety hangers
