Hey Buds, Newbie here.
My 8 White Widow autoflower plants are ready to harvest. Is there anything wrong with drying the buds in the same tent we used as a grow. We have a 5 tier drying rack. Can’t we just move the lights out of the way and hang the plants in the tent? I queried the support groups could not find anything to address this question.
Thanks in advance.
Anywhere that you can maintain ~60% humidity and ~68 degrees F is fine. It takes about a week.
As mentioned more than fine this is exactly how i grow once they get chopped the lights get moved out and plants hung whole
Thank you for the timely response. We plan on harvesting this evening.
We have observed other growers on this site cutting the entire autoflower plants off at major stem and hanging them upside down. What is the advantage to that?
I don’t know. I cut the flowers off the plant and put them on a sweater dryer. You will find as many drying methods are there are growers. The things that should remain consistent, regardless of what method you use, are temp and humidity.
In my small window of experience i used to chop them all in to buds the Wedryer now I just hang the whole plants and cover with a lawn refuse bag for at leat a week. Slow and low seems to have worked better for me this route. I have a closet I use tents to active yr round
The advantage of hanging the plant whole compared to cutting individual branches or buds is it helps prolong the moisture in the ppant so that it dosnt dry to fast when drying you want to shoot for 12 to 14 days at 60%rh and 60 degrees will give you a great slow dry if you dry to plants alot of terpenes will dissappear and the flowers can begin getting a nasty hay smell and tadte and at that point its not pleasant to smoke lol
Heck ya i have a separate small tent just for drying. Only drawback to using the same grow tent is loss of space and time
Drying big sections of a plant in a grow tent is the easiest way I’ve found to get a slower dry. If I had more space I’d hang whole plants. Fairly easy to maintain something close to 60°/60% in a tent. Here’s my last grow drying:
Took eight or nine days to dry. The slower, the better when it comes to drying.
We have 2 tents. Autoflowers in 4x4 and GDP in 5x5. I have a couple Newbie threads, take a look and you will see that we are on the crazy side.
We are building a big stash for personal use and for our 40yr old son who is disabled.
We do plan on doing another grow soon as this one is complete. As soon we can, but this time with less plants for larger yields. I also found some Alcapuco Gold seeds and haven’t smoked any of that bud since 1973.
I like the clothes hanger technique.
My grow tent is also Used for drying after plants harvest. You can leave your exhaust fan running will control smell . 1 small 6 inch fan but not blowing directly on product. Temperature 64 to 68 degrees
Humidity 40 to 50 percent slow dry 8 to 10 days. Good luck
I have a bunch of that if any body needs a door prize
My girls are in the Dryer area numbers look good fresh hangers this morning
I use my tent as well, but temp is dictated by the temp of the room. I don’t know how people get 60 degrees in their tent.
I take my plants apart by the branch, then strip everything without tricomes, just buds, I hate dealing with all the dry leafs. I live in the desert and slow drying is a process. But this is how my plants end up.
Then its simple to pop buds from the branches when ready, all trimmed ready to bag.
I have plants drying in a spare grow tent as we speak.
I bought a cheap 4x4 specifically for drying… Was easier for me… So i didn’t have to take down lights and other equipment.
I bought a 4" AC Infinity exhaust with a charcoal filter… Which i have in one of the upper ports… I have a 4" inlet for fresh air.
A oil filled radiator heater controlled by an inkbird temp controller… And a humidifier attached to an inkbird humidity controller just in case the humidity get below a certain level to prolong the dry. Also a small fan helping to circulate air but not blowing directly on the drying weed.
I go with a 60% RH and 60-65F tent environment.
Awesome responses and great ideas. We have the 8 plants hanging on clothes hangers. We are using the same exhaust to the carbon filter to keep the grow private. We also have a small fan in the tent for circulation. Looking forward to getting the girls dry.
Thanks everyone.
@1954dw To ensure a proper dry… Use one of these to check bud moisture…
Or
When it gets to 10-12% moisture that will translate to 58-62% humidity in bag or jar for curing. I use the long prong meter as I feel I crush some buds trying to get a center reading on larger buds.
I would recommend grovebags to store and cure. Jars are a pain as you must burp them daily. Grovebags put them in at between 58-62% is perfect for curing and the bags handle the burping. After at least a month of cure… You’ll have good smokeable reefer.
Good luck!
I drop the net off of the scrog frame and turn it into a drying rack.
This time I only grew large colas.
They had a good 9 days of drying. The intake fan was set on low and I would only run the exhaust fan when the humidity increased.
Conditions were favorable. Room temp around 65 with humidity around 50%. After 9 days the when the tent’s internal humidity stayed at 60% they were ready for final trim and curing.
