1st Time Grow, Don't do it This Way!

This is my very first grow and I started it before reading very much info, so I made several mistakes right off the bat. So I titled this grow Don’t Do it This Way! It’s not done yet just a little short of flower time so feel free to follow along if ya want, I’ll try to share where I think I went wrong and people can chime in where ya feel you can help.

The Don’t Do It This Way Grow
.Seeds used, Who knows…I had purchased some type of purple auto, and got 5 free seeds with it. I think they were some kind of Cheese but can’t recall if they were auto or fem or what? Planted 2 of the purple and 2 of the other and the purple didn’t pop…So I’m growing the Cheese unknown…

. Soil used was Mirical grow mixed with 5lb bag of worm castings and about 1/4 cup lime. A little bit worried about this because from what im reading it could end up hot but hoping that the worm castings mellow out the Miricle Grow some. dug a hole where my sprouts will go and lined it with only Worm castings on top of my mix, so tiny plant won’t be subjected to Mirical Grow right off the bat.
greenhouse
.Sprouted seeds via peat pucks in a small covered green house, took less than a week. The peat moss pucks get fat with water added, so I figure I can place them in big pot pretty quick because the roots won’t break through the peat for awhile, giving the plant time to grow a bit before hitting the worm castings.

.Started sprouted plants in big pot on November 22. 18 hours timer on lights in grow tent, with small tub of water to the side to provide humidity bump. Boosted pot up higher towards lights. I had a small fan on the floor of the grow tent and had the tent zipped up tight to keep it warm inside. after a couple weeks, I put the fan into the intake hole to draw in fresh air because it looked like it might be getting to warm inside or I was getting signs of nutrient burn not sure which. After further research pretty sure it was nutrient burn. Watered 2 times with distilled water and let them go. Watered a couple more time with regular water making sure not to over water. Feeling like if I can get them to veg state the nutruient burn will stop.

.On December 11th, 2 days short of 3 weeks, I noticed the plant going from seedling looking, to more the look of a plant. Trimed off lower nutrient burnt leaves, plants looks great. One looks better than the other. Might be to close to light so moved back down.

.December 12th, Did first top on main cola.

.December 14th noticed tips of leaves drooping, did some research and could be to much nitrogen. Remcomend’s flushing, I used mircial grow so this may be a problem. I flushed with 7.2 ph water till run off and they perked right up. Did some testing after reading the site, people harping on PH. I got a good PH meter and tested distilled water and tap water both were high, like 8.5 or more. Going to use a tiny amount of vinagar to bring the water in range and start watering with that.Plant stems have tripled in size in a weeks time now about the size of a pencil. A couple of tips are showing burn signs, which I am sure points to nutrient burn. I used Mirical grow and Worm castings so there is a lot of nutrient, plus I did a cal mag watering. Next time use less mirical grow and more castings and pearlite or go with another medium like Foxfarms etc.

.December 16th day 25, plants look good even with the minor showings of nutrient problems I listed. I have a better light coming but wondering if I wasted my cash since these things look pretty good so far.

.December 17th day 26, defoilated 3/4 of the big fan leafs and did some secondary toping. Spent a little time getting a gallon of water to proper PH, will add Cal MAg and something with Potasium to it but far from time to water since I flushed to run off a couple days ago.

.December 18th day 27, defoilation seems to have helped a lot. A lot of new growth all over plant. 2 set’s of big fan leafs on both plants blocking light, I will take these off tomorrow. Humidity is holding at 50% and Temp 77. Not going to get a humidifier involved for fear of mold. Moved tray of water closer to fan, so breeze from it might increase evaporation and increase humidity.

.December 19th day 28. Took off the tops big fan leafs.

.December 20th day 29. New light is awesome! All leafs look good, new grow looks good. There was 1 fan leaf that had some spots up top, romoved it all other leafs look real good.

.December 21th day 30. going to do some (LST) Low Stress Training on the plant thats streching, pull it away from the plants that is more bushy. Going to water with lightly with PH 6.5 Tap water to wash out some of the feeding from a couple days ago. Pic below is (LST) begining.

Wanted to mention I have a 2x2x4 grow tent, started out with a kit that included a 300w grow light a fan and a carbon filter. Then fan was way to loud so another one is on the way. I purchaced a new 1200w (262w actual) for the tent and its great but pulls a lot of electricty will go with HLG next time around.

Welcome just thought I would mention you can apply a sound deadener kit to the outside housing off the fan will reduce sound 50%. Same sound deadener people use in floor pans of classic cars. Peel and stick. Good luck

NEVER start a grow WITHOUT A PH n PPM meter set. Affordable sets on amazon for $20.
Like driving 70 mph at night in a fog…without headlights.

Miracle grow = bad news.

What u got growing I see alot of post but you dont seem to be growing. You a cop? Lol

@Cheftodd420

I know of what I speak.
Your questions are rude and show poor taste and an aggressive behavior pattern.

Guess what? Rude questions and a “are you a cop” insult will be remembered by this almost 70 year old long haired Hippie. Not smart to insult people for fun. It speaks volumes about you.

I will not answer your rude questions. I have no reason to explain to you.

Wow no sence of humor
I’ll make sure to stay away.

Thanks for taking the time to respond to my first grow. Learning a lot and I’m sure the next one will be far more rewarding!

That was kind of a trolling post, nothing in it was positive or added to the conversation…A lot of different people grow hell I’m an Ex-Fed…The dude stuck in his 2 cents on my post, and he was 100 % correct in what he said.

Sorry for that not my intention just wanted to know what he was growing I’ll never make that mistake again. Good luck.

@Demar…glad to offer advice

Feel free to ask questions. We like to help.

We all have to get that first grow out of the way, my first left much to be desired. But as the saying goes, ‘if I knew then what I know now’! In the future though, you will want to put each plant in a separate pot. Girls need their space to hang posters of boy bands :+1:

When I was reading your post I really didn’t expect plants to look as nice as they did when I got to pictures. Cut yourself some slack, they look pretty good. There’s s couple of things I picked up from your post that will help along the way.

As @EclecticJack pointed out, keep single plant in pots for now. It’s not impossible to grow multiple plants in a pot, but it can cause some problems later in grow. No matter how much we try to keep things the same, those plants will likely require different needs throughout your grow. It’s difficult to tend to each plants need when they’re in the same pot. Will also make each plant compete for root space.

Also, distilled water should measure a little closer to a ph 7. If your meter is reading over 8 on distilled, it may be out of calibration. You should check it against a test solution and see. It may need to be calibrated or have something else going on. Once you can make sure it’s working properly, set your ph a little lower to something more like 6.5. If you’re confident meter is setup properly, the next time you provide a good watering collect some runoff and get a ph reading to see what’s going on in root zone. Adding that lime was probably a good move as it will help buffer ph some. But you’ll want to get that in order to have the most success.

As much as we don’t like Miracle grow, it can be managed. The biggest issue with it is time released nitrogen. But it’s not impossible to grow in, so don’t feel defeated because of it. The worm castings though are also a very nutrient rich supplement, so not the best to combat starting in nutrient rich soil. For your next grow, look for a designated seed starting mix or inert medium like promix. Then you can transplant up to hotter mix if that’s what you’re looking to do.

I’m sure I missed something, but I think you’re off to a good start considering. Just work with what you have to best of your abilities and don’t hesitate to ask questions. Lots of great people here to help you along the way. Best of luck getting to a bountiful harvest.

Thanks a lot! a bunch of good info there, going to try to use flushing to lower some of the hotness and get what I can from this grow. Your right the plants are pretty resilient and seem to be doing ok, just worried later on when nitrogen isn’t needed as much and my soil still hot with it. Will def be more knowlageable in next grow

December 23, Day 32, Watered with a lot of PH balanced Tap Water, hoping to lower the heat on soil. So far so good.

Running out of grow room, if what Im reading is correct about the plants doubling in size in flowering stage. So I decided that now is the time to flip to 12/12 so my buds won’t be into the lighting system. I am doing some (LST) but only in a 2x2x4 tent so now is the time for flip. Buckle up here we go, come on flowers! Next time around I will mount inline fan from roof cross members and save myself some floor room. Just got fan yesterday so had to do it this way, this time.

.December 27th Day 36, Looking good. Everything looks thicker already. Heat in tent is up trying some adjustments. Running now in the mid 90’s, was before new fan running at 77… so may end up opening bottom flaps we will see. More to come!

.December 28th, Day 37 I did my venting late and the lazy way and had to re-do it. Now it’s right with fan mounted inside and up top. Doing this corrected the problem and some…now holding at 73 degrees. If I put a filter in front of the intake it bumps up temp 1 degree, so I am good now !

December 30th day 39. Had to do more (LST) things really growing, also think it may be an Auto Strain…Flipping to 12 / 12 had done nothing but make them grow, no flowers and can’t even see sex yet.

Sex confirmed!
