Winter Plants Outside

I am in South America, I planted some seeds a couple of months ago that I thought were Auto Flowers. They are not autos and are not going to flower before the days start getting longer. My plan is to let them eke out the winter in a make shift green house and hope they live to flower in the next growing season. September to March/April. Any thoughts?

You could look into light deprivation to get them to flower soon. It’s a practice of blocking light for part of the day, to give an artificially long night. The effort might not be worth it to you, just an option to consider.

They will likely be enormous plants if they grow for that long outside. Not necessarily a bad thing. If they get too tall to be seen instead of hidden, you might need to do some topping and plant training to manage size. Some stakes, netting or other supports for big branches may be needed too.

Thanks,
I think I’ll let them fend for themselves.

You can keep them going over the winter in a greenhouse but you’ll need to give them some supplemental lighting until the end of whenever spring ends in your part of the world.
