Hi everyone, I had my first year growing with two plants. I successfully harvested my obama kush indica last weekend and it’s drying nicely in the closet (although I’ve had a spike in humidity for some reason so I’ll pick up a dehumidifier today). My question is about my second parent that I’m about to harvest. It’s a sunset sherbet hybrid that had an infestation of spider mites so treated it with a few rounds of nukem. I had to do two applications because the pests were heavy. I took a test sample in between the applications (to check for bugs with a microscope, saw them and did second application) and dried it. My concern is there was an undertone of soap that could be tasted and I wondered if perhaps a peroxide bath might help wash off any residue. I was considering the bath anyway due to the mites. Thoughts?
1 cup 3% Peroxide for every 5 gal water (2 containers required, a wash and a rinse). Water does not have have to be PH’ed.
I dunk, swish around for no more than 1-2 minutes per tank. Lay on cookie cooling racks with paper towels under it and provide good airflow to help rid excess water before hanging to dry.
Do it once and you will be grossed out by what you are smoking in unwashed herb.
I lost my main cola on the obama kush I just harvested to bud rot so I’m familiar with the process because I washed part of the plant closest to the mold but not the rest. My question was does anyone have any experience with washing away unwanted residue (aka soap) that I was tasting in my test batch? Thank you.
My limited experience on this is that I personally had very little come off of my buds when I did it - the water had bits of floating trim but nothing else. I stopped halfway through and the half that I washed wound up much more dry/crunchy than the ones I didn’t. They both seem to vape similarly, but there is some lost satisfaction in pulling apart a dry bud compared to a sticky one.
Edit: sorry, I see you’re asking about soap. I didn’t have that issue so you can take my above with a grain of salt. That said, soap is soluble in plain water and should come off.
Have you tried washing with just plain water to get the soapy residue off? I’d just use something like my sink sprayer but a gentle stream. Is it already dried? I actually tried a peroxide bath to get rid of mites and it didn’t work. They just disappeared when the plant was dry. Basically because there wasn’t any moisture left for them to feed on.
The plant in question is not dried yet and the plan is to harvest it tomorrow. Yeah my local grow shop basically told me the same thing. Once the plant is harvested it isn’t creating food for the mites so they leave. It sounds like maybe just a simple rinse would be more effective for what I’m trying to accomplish. Thank you.
You’re welcome.
