Why is buffered coco/perlite mix so expensive?

idk i feel like the price for coco is so high and im wondering why do we just not have easy access to a large supply to lower cost ? the beaches of florida have tons of coconuts even Hawaii or Caribbean has tons of them do we not have easy access for trade or production ?

Good question. Im not close to a beach but I’ve often wondered if you could grind your own or is there more to it?

May be where you’re looking. It’s been a minute since I bought any but i think 1.5 ft³ bag is $15-$20 locally. Which is pretty reasonable for name brand product that has been processed.

If you’re looking on Amazon should be proof that your free shipping isn’t really free.

Coconut coir is generally made in third world/ impoverished countries (hope that’s not offending anyone) located near the coast and the people there get paid a pittance to make the stuff. It is relatively cheap to buy and cheaper and more environmentally friendly than peat moss, which is on the threatened species list due to climate change increasing peat fires that burn for years, as well as over harvesting, and destroying the adult plants due to land clearing.

Theoretically you could make your own coconut coir, especially if you have access to the old coconut husks. It’s just a matter of doing some physical labour and breaking it up, then soaking it. There might be more info online about how they manufacture it but as far as I know it’s primarily a matter of breaking up the husks and that isn’t always easy.

It is cheaper to buy separate blocks/ bricks of dry coconut coir and a bag of perlite and mix them up yourself compared to buying a premixed bag of re-hydrated coconut coir & perlite. I don’t know why the companies charge so much to add water and repack it but they do. I just buy a couple of coco bricks and a bag of perlite, re-hydrate and mix it myself, it’s a lot cheaper.

Amazon has it for $38 in store areas where I live sell it for $48 per bag it’s definitely cheaper on amazon and the free shipping definitely is real as I price compare everything.

Not sure where you have to shop but $15-$20 is more typical price.

I’m required to either shop amazon most the time but I’ve checked maybe 19 locations where I live they are high here very very high, lowest I’ve seen is like $32 on sale and that’s if I’m lucky.

I see you posted mother earth idk if that’s buffered I heard alot of bad things about it so I been sticking with foxfarm.

I’m not sure as i don’t use it either. It was just first hit online i could provide as my local shop doesn’t have an online store. Whether coco is prebuffered or not you should still buffer it as you have no idea how it’s been stored or how long it’s been sitting on shelf.

I just wanted to share that I buy it locally for about $20 and price seems pretty fair.

No doubt that would be a price I would love to pay lol just so pricey here, definitely always looking for new suggestions.
