Why 420, what does it mean?

Just wondering on the consensus on where the 420 phrase came about?

Most logical thing ive heard is was some college kids in california would meet after last class and would meet at same spot at 4:20 in the afternoon!

I know the term really gained popularity in 1990 when a reporter from high times magazine went to a greatful dead concert and saw flyers being passed out.

I think I read something on the history channel that one of the boys in the pack their father was the greatful dead’s manager and he started to pass out flyers to get a bunch of people to come and smoke at their meet up spot on 4/20 at 4:20.

I thought 4:20 was high-school dismissal time in LA. Not sure how i came about that info though.

LOL I heard that a group met after school at 4:20 everyday to look for abandoned cannabis fields in California :person_facepalming: of course I got my information off YouTube and that means it’s got to be true… right :rofl::rofl:
@MadamCalamity thanks for sponsoring that educational moment :facepunch::sunglasses::call_me_hand::grin:

Oh it definitely started because of a group of college kids. They would meet up at the same location each day at 4:20, they would hop in their car and smoke while they were on a mission to find a pot plant that a national guard supposedly left behind somewhere. I guess they never found it. I’m just saying that 420 became more known after that high times article because the reporter thought that it was cool.

I really like that dead flyer. Story I heard most was the high school kids after school. JUst meeting to toke cuz they had waited all day at school, and 4:20 was about when they were lighting up. It turned into a ritual and then a phenomenon.

I also heard that it was when “the guy” would be at “the spot” after school waiting to hook everybody uo, so that was when everybody got to start toking.

I think its like a Tootsie Roll Pop and the world doesn’t truly know.
