What killed this plant?

This plant died within two weeks of transplanting outside . There are white things at the base of the stem , the root did not develop .

What’s your climate like there? Frost may have gotten it.

To me the leaves look like they were chewed on possibly. Got a cat ?

The stem appears to be the start of damping off / rot.
Bit narrower at the soil line too.

Is that plant planted in an old tree stump? IMO but that might be part of the problem. Could be like the others have said also.:point_up::point_up:

My Guess Root Rot Mabey a Fungus, Don’t let it spread to any other plants

That’s not dead. It’s pretty messed up, but salvageable. I would throw it in a 3-5 gallon pot and leave it in the shade a couple days. To recover the roots. I bet I could have that 4’tall by the solstice.

I second the mammal munching. That’s not bugs. Do you have rabbits, or deer eating things on the lot? Deer usually finish the job so I would say bunnies. Or cat as @Oldguy suggested. Some cats like it better than catnip. Or does your dog eat grass a lot, trying out some new grass…

The too wet on the stem is also a problem as @Nip mentioned. Less watering and that goes away. Or better drainage. Whichever is easier.

What do you think about the leaves, leave them on or cut them off ? Mabey send energy to grow new ones

Your plan needs all of its remaining leaves. Too many people are eager to remove leaves on their plants.

Personally I think it needs what little leaf it has left as @merlin44 said.
But there’s still the stem rot.
Peroxide if used soon enough will help but this is pretty advanced.
Still worth a shot to try it and see tho.
