My week 5 Titan F1 auto recently began wilting and not looking good. I adjusted light distance to 20 inches, set at 50 % to Vivosun vs2000. My light schedule is timed to 18/6. Temps are from 77 to 80 with humidity in the 50s.
I’m using organic soil medium with bat guano, castings, crab meal, blood meal and oyster crushed shell with perl mixed in( but I don’t think enough, will add more perlite next time). My soil ph is normally around 6.5. I am using foxfarm trio. Grow big, tiger bloom and big bloom and calmag with watering.
I noticed 1 of my titans has started growing roots outside of the fabric 3 gallon pot on the bottom. Right now it’s 14 small white roots just starting to creep out.
Is this an underwatering issue? Or not enough soil for growth or some things else? Should I cut the fabric pot around the sides, put the bottom including the old fabric pot and plant it in bigger 5 gall pot?
She was a favorite of it, extremely fast so far and smells strong already. I don’t want to cause her anymore stress.
Also, I’m having low ppms. I am new to all of this, so I think I have something wrong. Using the directions for foxfarm on grow big and big bloom and using tap water that starts at pom if 55 and left out for several days with bubbler my total ppm is normally right at 650 to 660. My runoff is then in 200s. When I am using just straight water my runoff is only in 100s ppm. Should I be using more nutrients? I purchased repacked ff trio from eBay. And I’m concerned maybe they were watered down and then repacked. What’s the normal ppm for ff nutrients ppm in 1 gallon for you guys?
1st pic is from above
2nd pic is the small roots growing from bottom of fabric pot
Roots poping out of fabric pots is extremely common and is a sign of healthy root system most often.
They grow out and die off on their own and “air prune” themselves, which causes the roots inside the pot to branch out with lots of smaller thin roots it’s actually one of the reason fabric pots are better then plastic ones.
As for under watering its pretty easy to tell if you give the pot a little lift to feel the weight.
If the pot is really light then it’s dry, if its got sone weight to it then it’s still got water in it.
You’ll be surprised once you do it a few times at just how much easy you can tell the difference between a dry pot and a wet one, there’s a big noticeable difference
You can plant grow bags into other pots though without having to cut the bag, I do this sometimes with a smaller bag into a larger one.
The roots grow through the bag into the fresh pot with ease
Wow! Thank you so much for the photos and knowledge. This is my 1st grow, I’ve got 10 autos timed a few weeks apart. I’m learning, reading alot, doing research and trying to educate myself. There are so many directions to go with this process and many choices to make. I appreciate your advice very much and looking at the pics from yours I’m going to put mine in a 5gallon fabric pot with soil between and give her a little more space to advance out and be healthy
Bonus tip for watering. I learned to calibrate the water by weight method by sticking my finger in the soil an inch or so. if it feels muddy it’s over wet, if it’s dry it’s time to water, and If it’s damp it’s just right.
I definitely would love to get to the point where I am confident in my capabilities, and I believe trial and error will unfortunately get me there. I read a lot, compare information and try my best to apply the methods to my plants. Comparing them to your growth, I know I’m failing for the time being. But hopefully these finish up, I move to the next and I take everything I adjusted and learned and see better healthy plants. Your grow looks fantastic l, good job! I used to grow many years and never used nutrients or fancy soil or hygrometers or anything and has wildly large crops. So, this type.of growing with autos is very new to me. It’s like I know nothing compared to photos.
Can I ask your medium, nutrients schedule and how you prep your water? I only realized about 2 weeks my water was super high with chlorine, my tap was only 55ppm, but very high chlorine levels. So I now sit it out for at least 2 days and bought air bubbler that goes 24/7 in sitting water. I also bought another light, nothing expensive. Viparspectra p1500, 150w to give them a light boost.
I use soil ,
Something called harvest organics ,I then mix that with pearlite ,peat moss, worm castings ,vermiculite .
The soil in those fabric pots is on about its 4th time being reused ,of course I remove all roots .
I use AC infinity self watering bases,
My nutrient line is jacks 321 at full strength
And that’s what I keep the bases filled with the entire grow ,no plain water ,when they are seedlings the feed is at 1/2 strength .
I use regular tap water ,mine is about 7.8-7.9 PH out of the tap but once I add the jacks it goes down to about 6.7 so I stopped checking it a few grows ago .
I use regular gallon jugs and weigh my feed with a gram scale before adding it.
It’s just part A @3.79 then reg epsom salt @1.0 and then part B @2.5
When I start seeing any type of pistol or sign of flower I start also adding bloom boosters ,I use Mother of All Blooms or the fox farms water soluble trio .
I really think I could up the nutrients per gallon but I never do ,in the photos above the top down view the bottom left plant is a photo ,Alani skunk x gluey from brothers Grimm the rest are autos ,A Mosca frosted watermelon auto .and the other two are ILGM tangie autos .
I have only grown autos in this tent so far ,
The harvest before last ,I grew 4 Yeti wedding autos bred by @Graysin farms and pulled in 2lbs from them .
I want to say the bottom feeding self watering bases are a huge part of any successes I’ve had ,it takes the guess work out of watering and I never have to worry about top watering or runoff ,or fungus gnats living in my medium .
The water that comes out my tap literally smells like I am pouring bleach into my washer. So I was letting my water sit about 7 days before using it. I read online somewhere been that after about 5 days cloramine will die off. I have since changed this up since I bought a boogie blue water filter. It’s about 65$ for the filter but the difference it made in my water is amazing. When I first hooked it up my kids were like why are you doing that. So I had them take a drink of the filtered water and they was like “ok it’s water” then I went to the faucet and got a cup and said drink this. Immediately they was like “no way it stinks”
The filter will last for roughly 45,000 gallons. As a test I’ve been drinking a cup every week still taste good but only had it about a month.
I have been thinking about installing an online water filtration system, as the type that hook up to spout won’t work for me. Previous home owner installed faucet kind where extendable hose directly comes out of faucet head, thus making a spout filter impossible to install. My water smells so strongly, and I guess I got used to it because I never remember smelling it previous to learning how high the levels were. But now it’s all I can smell. Im hoping using an air stone bubbler with a few days of water left out with deal with the chlorine issues
I just read up on that filter and that’s seems amazing. And a hell of a solution for me, I just ordered one and a free tea compost sample too! Thanks I really appreciate it
Your tap water at 55 ppm is fantastic IMO and doesn’t need conditioning. Chlorine and chloramines can be easily removed by adding a tablespoon of 3% peroxide per 5 gallons. It will bind to the chloramines and gas it off immediately.
Honestly man if you’re looking for the easiest way to get “professional” results its can be really easy with coco-coir mixed with perlite and water every day with nutrient solution.
It takes all the guess work out of it as you supply everything on a daily basis where as in soil its hard to tell when to feed whatvir when to water at what ph.
In coco-coir, it water/feed every day and you can’t over water, in fact you can feed them multiple times a day if you wanted to…
Most if my grows are in coco-coir and perlite, and I use my city tap water thats at about 100ppm with no issues.
After the addition of bubbler and Cal Mag Plus plants have seen a very big improvement. Absolutely no sagging in the leaves or leaves turned down. The Royal Queen Gorilla Glue has continued to grow very oddly. Every set of leaves on one side is missing one from the set in the same place.
After the addition of the filter and cal mag plus the plants took off. The filter is easy as hell and is supposed to last a long time, like many many many cycles. My dogs are loving the water from the hose now too, there is a definite difference in my water smell and taste
