Ventilating grow room heat with a 600 watt HPS

Dumb ventilation question.

My MH/HPS light is a 600/750/1000 watt light that generates quite a bit of heat (yes I know LED is better, that’s a future thing that will cost more upfront).

I don’t want to vent out the heat through the window due to neighbors/ security issues, currently the set up is as below in the image. Six inch automatic fan kicks on at 80 F with variable preset speeds and sucks air through the bulb and points out the open doorway.

It’s literally heating half the house this way and it’s winter with it running at 600 watts :person_shrugging::person_shrugging::person_shrugging:. Should I cut a six inch hole in the ceiling for the heat output? Maybe have another six inch duct for the input on the other side of the light as well? How do other people do this without using the window.

I’d vent to the attic. Been there done that a few times. Save the cutouts😉

Yeah I have one tent vent out of a window and another tent that vents into the attic, set that all up when I was using 600 watt HPS in both tents.

So you just drilled a hole in the ceiling, and planning on repairing it if you move?

Simple get you a top quality carbon filter and send it through the attic, and if your not going to use a window unit get a portable ac and have it set to come on at 77 degrees and a heater for night set at 67 on a digital thermostat.

Didn’t drill, just held the 6" ducting hose up to the ceiling, drew a circle around it to get the right size then just cut the hole with a serrated knife, pushed the insulation out of the way then pushed the ducting up thru it, saved the cutout and will just put it back in and repair if/when I sell the house.

Just make sure that you’re not the only house on the block with no snow on the roof. It’s guaranteed to bring the law through your front door with their iron key :pensive:

Legal up to 12 plants :+1::+1::+1: here. Didn’t want the window vent since the neighbors are douches already and I’d rather not have a window that won’t lock facing a street. :face_with_monocle::face_with_monocle::face_with_monocle:

I would’ve done same. Would also put your fan in manual and run it all the time. You can tweak speed to maintain a reasonable temp.

Why fan all the time? Is that better for hot and cold fluctuations or are you just thinking about heat?

I have mine pulling air from the outside and exhausting outside.

Works well in Texas during the winter months. Shutdown from early May through end of October.

Take some 3/4 inch insulated foam board and cut two six inch holes, one on each end about 24 inches apart. Connect your hoses hoses and your pulling outside air in and exhausting the hot air out.

Your exhaust outlet should be pulling air from the top of your room and inlet should be positioned low on the floor.

Okay hmm.

So the way I have this setup, the fan is on the floor pulling cooler air into the light and then out of the light it goes into the attic. I don’t want to utilize the window at all for any purposes.

From what I read from your post I’ve set it up correctly???

In summer, I’m not sure this is a good idea with high temperatures outside. Maybe vegetative outdoors in the summer and then flowering inside around beginning of September in Okla. (plus we beat you in football this year in Austin :wink:)

Yes you are cooling the HPS down. Looking good with your setup.
With LEDs you will not have that to deal with.

Yes the horns have had some issues for quite some time.

BTW my brother in law played at OU the late 70’s early 80’s. Number 24 at wide receiver. Still follow them but I played down the road in Denton Tx.

Two reasons. Mainly because you want constant air exchange and co2 replenishment. But you also don’t want your bulb getting any warmer than necessary. If you turned your light on and left it on the bulb would be good for years. But because the lights are constantly going on and off the heating and cooling of bulb deteriorates them quickly. In our application most growers will replace hps bulb every 1-2 flowering cycles.
