I’m a closet grower in a rental property with no windows or doors to vent out of. I’m looking for a solution to vent my inline air and portable a/c (for curing/drying) exhaust to the exterior of the house.
I need a simple and efficient way to do this that is easily repairable when I move out. I’ve decided that the best option is to install a vent register in the ceiling of the closet and run vent hose up to it and then out of a gable vent to the exterior of the house. That way I can pop the piece of drywall back in, touch up with texture and paint and be good when I move out.
I want this to look clean and not ghetto. Has anyone done this? My issue currently is how to attach the 6” hose up to the vent register cleanly without having to go into the attic every time. I don’t want to just leave an open hole in the ceiling either for pests to get through. Plus the register blends in, should I have to pull the whole grow area and didn’t have time to patch the hole back up yet. Any advise?
If you vent to attic or outstanding could potentially put your home under negative pressure. If it does will probably increase your heating and cooling bills, so I don’t typically recommend people do this. If it’s the only way to control your environment then I would just install a damper and leave it hooked up all the time.
The register in your picture has a damper build in. It appears to be a 6x12 approximately. When you pick up a new register you can get a boot to transition from the rectangular flange on the register to a round duct. For example you will need a 6x12 to 6 inch round boot. The rectangular side of the boot will have straight edges, and you will need to bent a 3/4 inch flange outwards on all four sides. This will give you something to screw the boot to the ceiling. Then use the same flanges to screw the register to. @dbrn32 is correct about the negative pressure created in the rest of your living area. But I believe he is thinking that you want to connect a fan to the exhaust duct. If you just want to put a register in the closet ceiling with just a little flex duct attached, I think it will work just fine. It least it would be good inexpensive first attempt,
