I’m very new to the scene, just started smoking a year ago and as one might expect, I love it! After finding a TON of seeds in my q from a friend, I decided to try my hand at growing, especially because of the increasing number of states where it’s legal. I actually started the seeds about a week or two ago, and they’re taking off!
The ‘mother’ bud I got the seeds from was trainwreck, so I’m assuming the seeds are as well. This will be a grow journal where I’m going to keep progress updates, share the adventure, and hopefully pick up any tips and pointers along the way! (also figuring out the site as I go - if this is in the wrong category let me know! totally happy to change it as necessary)!
I’ve been keeping them in my window during the day for natural sunlight and the tape on the cups is to attach them to the ceiling light (CFL). Right now given my living situation it’s fairly underground and I’m hoping to let them just do their thang until I can move into a place where I will have a grow tent and a 250W HPS light! Watering has been done with a spray bottle, twice a day because the sunlight is intense enough that the water evaporates off pretty quick. Soil is being kept moist to dry in the top inch.
Welcome to the group! Looks like you’re doing great so far. For tip number 1, I would probably cover your clear cups with something. Roots won’t like the light hitting them.
I’m with @dbrn32 on the cups. Get some solid color solo cups and drop the clear ones into them. That way you can check the roots/ moisture in the soil without disturbing them. Make sure you have some holes I those cups so they’ll drain when you start watering normally.
Ph is king. Get a decent ph meter and use it every watering! You’ll save yourself a lot of headaches down the road if your ph is correct.
I do have plenty of holes in the bottom, and they seem to be drinking it all! With just sunlight they were a bit sluggish but they really took off when I put them under the light! Even just a CFL, I’m really interested to see the kind of crazy growth I hear about using HPS.
As for roots, good point. Getting cups now to save them. For pH, how does that work exactly? Get a strip testing kit and test the water before I water them? Is there a ‘best’ pH for trainwreck?
Watch them very carefully if u got that many seeds in a q then it most likely was a male. Or it hermie early on. At minimum they are reg seeds and could b male or female. At the first site of nanners. CULL. Good luck. Hoping for a herd of girls
I moved your journal for you.

Welcome to the forum @sweet_quiche. Looks like you’re off to a good start. Are you tenting those to add humidity? That might help with your soil drying out.
Your PH range will depend on what grow medium you’re using. Coco vs soil etc. If your using soil 6-6.5 is your sweet spot. I’m not sure on the coco. You should ph your water before you start to water and then test the runoff when done. Once your plants are bigger and you add nutrients this will let you know if you are having some issues with nutrient uptake and other issues. Even the water you are spritzing them with should be ph’d each time before they are sprayed. Test strip will get through in a pinch but your better off investing a good ph meter.
Here’s the rest of them… worst case scenario I’m thinking of sprouting them all (they’re approaching a year old) and culling whatever males pop up. If I wind up with a ton more female than I expect I think I’ll choose the best looking ones to really focus on and the others will go outside, with an ‘if they grow, they grow’ type deal.
Color means nothing about gender for seeds. Some people say there’s an indent on a female seed but in 25 yrs of growing I have never seen that to b true. Most likely they will b female seeds from a hermied plant I would only start what u want to finish. Good luck
Thanks for your input! I definitely do only want to start what I think I can handle (3-4), but have also heard that seeds can go bad (which is why I’d have been interested in starting the others to just grow outside)… Is there any truth to that, or could I hold on to these seeds for a while yet?
The seeds will be fine for years if you store them right. I keep mine in a safe and I planted and grew a pure sativa from a 5 year old seed as an experiment. They need a cool fairly dry place.
Also thanks for the welcomes everyone! Glad to have stumbled across this community! @dbrn32@SilentHippie@AnneBonny
With regards to watering and pH, I’ve ordered the less expensive pH meter (just trying to save a little coin on the first grow), but… measuring run off? I’ve not had any excess water drip out the bottom of the cups, is that bad? Thus far I’ve just been keeping the top soil damp with a spray bottle, about 6-8 squirts. When should I ramp up the watering and how much?
I usually mist my seedlings for 1-2 weeks depending on how quickly they establish. Once they get 3 finger leaves should be fine. Just remember, when they are this young, they don’t need a lot of water. After your first watering it may take 3 or 4 or even 5 days before they need watered again. Your plants need dry periods as well as moist periods. They deal with underwatering better than overwatering and with the clear cups it should be pretty easy to tell if the soil is dry.
Nice seedlings man! I just started growin too, i managed to reach flower on a mini plant that was only 30cm tall lol, but either way it looked great Your seedlings look better than mine did, it’s nice that you share it with us
Thanks! Good to know, I’ll start spacing out my watering a bit then. When they have three fingers, about how much should I add? I’ve read about 4 teaspoons, but that still doesn’t seem like that much…
