The Stretch...how can I induce it?

The scrog net can help hold all those heavy buds up to the light!

Word, son. My original goal was to grow buds so fat, they HAVE to go in wide mouth jars.

Shoot for the moon! :first_quarter_moon_with_face:

If you medicate well enough, you may get there.

I’ll try that with a plant I haven’t topped, and just focus on one big, fat, stinky cola.

Or, at least, believe you did anyway

And isn’t that all that really matters?

Amen, brother

If you plan to scrog, the plant needs time to get into and fill a portion of the net before you flip lights. Otherwise you’re just using the net as bud support for the handful of cola’s that make it to the net. You’re suppose to use the net to hold down your tops while the rest of the branches catch up. As you continue to tuck the branches further away from the main stem, you’ll also get bud sites along those branches. There are plenty of good threads here to visit and see good examples of a scrog, @Bogleg and @Myfriendis410 @MAXHeadRoom @peachfuzz all have current journals going you can check out.

Plants will stretch naturally during the transition period to flower, absolutely! They will also stretch to low light intensity, and red dominant light spectrums. Google search pics of what happens when people grow with incandescent or halogen lights, the node spacing is ridiculous. Even warm white vs cold white cfl grows, they have low intensity and warm white are predominantly red wavelengths.

Like @3high5you said, had you not topped it would probably be in the net already. But once that single top got to net and you started tucking it, the rest of the branches would quickly follow.

@dbrn32 is right on you keep it in veg till the screen is full then flip it it can take several weeks but if only growing one plant it’s definitely the way to go ! When I do it I will only top it or fem it 1 time that’s all she really needs because of how long it’s in veg

Yes, that was the original plan, but in all the grow journals I’d read, they were only vegging for 5-6 weeks before the screen was already filling up. I was beginning to wonder if she was a runt.

I was following “Mick’s Coco - K.I.S.S. - Scrog Method” (I won’t provide a link but Gargle for it) and I followed the suggested topping regime. I got the expected number of branches but never came near the necessary limb length to fill a SCROG. I could veg for months and it still wouldn’t work

That’s not a complaint, more an observation. With high intensity, wide band LEDs (in my case BlackDog PhytoMax2 200) you just don’t get the node spacing required. My previous grows from years ago were under CFL and cold or warm the plant’s node spacing was far bigger

Judging by the way these grew even if I hadn’t topped them I would have been waiting a long time to reach and even partially fill a screen

I’ll veg the next crop under cfls.

I want to see how my current grow turns out before I make that decision. I’m getting the benefits of a scrog (lots of bud sites, an even canopy). I suspect I will need the scrog net to support the buds.

Very clearly it’s not a classic scrog but until I weigh the finished, dried bud I don’t know if that’s a bad thing.

Worst case, you’re gonna get high. Just saying.

When did you drop seeds in dirt?

Cfl’s aren’t necessarily the answer either. It’s easier to get longer node spacing definitely. But you usually have lower rates of photosynthesis as well. So you get longer node spacing and a slower growing plant.

November 24, put seed in soil.

Sure so it’s a win  All I am sure of is that trying to do a classic scrog under LEDs is a big ask. They simply don’t have the necessary node spacing even if the LED is a long way from the plant - and doing that negates one of the benefits of LEDs - low temperatures. Putting the lights a long from the plant reduces efficiency

edit: I am a relative noob so I am looking for input from experienced LED growers. This is just my experience with a single LED grow vs a couple of classic CFL/HPS grows a few years ago

And in my box, I can only get the lights about 16" above where I have the screen.

The beauty is you can veg the plant for as long as you want. I had mine in veg for 60 days. Here is mine the day I switched the lights:

That’s a Gold Leaf and also was a squat, bushy plant. I’m not sure how high my screen is.

And here is that same plant after the stretch two weeks later:

At this point I ended up having to add a second screen because that screen got too full.

I SCROG, but my use of it is sort of a hybrid. I introduce the plant late in veg after some aggressive supercropping and I allow the plant to reach 24" or so. This is because I don’t have room for two SCROG in my veg tent. As soon as they go in the flowering box they get the SCROG. I don’t flip them for a couple of weeks and thread the screen. Some branches end up being simply supported but the mains get pulled down and given the traditional SCROG treatment. It works and while it’s not low stress they respond well. Once they fill in I flip them to 12/12 over a week or so.

That’s what I have been doing and have gotten good yields.
