Switching back to HPS

Since moving to where I am now it costs me more money to heat the tent than it does to run my lumatek zues Pro 600w led’s so I’m in the process of switching back to 2 600w hps for the heat they pump out and do away with the oil filled rads running 24/7

What’s members opinions on the decrease in quality of the buds I should expect? Do you think this will effect yield or just the general quality?

Should I just bite the bullet and carry on with led’s and secondary heating?

None if you are hitting proper PPFD levels:

Seedling: 300 PPFD minimum
Veg: 600 PPFD min
Flower: 800 PPFD min

Lots of variables. If just a need for heat I would look into a different way first. Loss of spectrum and efficiency would be my personal concern. Where is tent. Lung room control vs tent, size, temps we are adjusting etc.
A little more info and I am sure a solution has already archived here or 1 of our current active members have had this issue. A lot of us are on the other side. Control the heat .
You can also consider a venting switch. Vent from bottom with a top draw. Slow the fan to low and drag heat down vs cold up. Like reversing a ceiling fan in winter. I can see 20° if can get the greenhouse effect. Just a thought.

I’m in 1.2 x 2.4 x2.0 tent and the tent is in a unheated spare bedroom
summer temps outside are 12-16C at best in the summer so I’m fighting a constant battle to raise temps inside to keep and maintain a decent grow room temp
If running led’s I need oil filled rads to hit the sweet spot
I’ve tried the extraction on the floor to reverse the flow of air but it doesn’t make much difference
So switching back to hps is the only thing I can think off to reduce the energy bill

Have you tried adding something to serve as a heat source inside the tent directly something like a heating pad you would use for sore muscles the tent isnt very big it likely wouldn’t need much otherwise I think vivosun makes a small electric heater meant for grow tents maybe something like that would work for you
After a quick check on amazon I found a few options I would probably consider this one if I were looking for one

As Midwest stated, if you’re hitting the light requirements there’s no drop off. People switched to LED’s to lower the heat in their space, along with cheaper energy costs. But if you can combine the light and the heat into one bill then that’s your route. Just curious, where are you that summer temps are 60°f?

I’m of the opinion that potency is higher in weed grown under 600watt HPS for flower and 600 watt MH for veg . I’ve only been growing under leds for a couple of years since our power got too expensive . Yes they make great heaters in winter . Have used HPS for 20 years .

Will be switching back on my next run in a few weeks time
Good to know the quality shouldn’t drop off
Thanks for the replies

Can tell you your temps are naturally perfect for hydroponic growing with the LEDs. I would love to be topped at 60-68°, aka 15-20c, heat here yesterday was 108°F aka 42.2c

And I just watched the Robinson~Crusoe movie last night lol. Was a good movie

The tents a fair size the dimensions are in meters so it 4ft x8ft x 7ft and it takes a lot of heat to heat that size tent

Would love to know what size tent your in if you think that’s small

Another one bites the dust.

Hps is the go to in Winter everywhere. Two 600 watt MH -HPS will crank out way more tight bud than ya can smoke.

Many, prefer to run both nowdays. Something about that HPS red light has been tried and proven for decades.

A single 600 watt HPS above the canopy with walls of led is a killer setup. Coverage is the key. Plus no more heater.

I assumed it was feet not meters so yeah in feet that would be a small tent so maybe buy two heaters then since they can do a 5x5 two ould be more than sufficient

I don’t know about that , why do a lot of breeders and growers still use HPS and advertise the fact . It’s not like they’re ignorant of LEDs . There’s something in the spectrum of HPS light that escapes understanding . They really do seem to have a slight edge over LEDs but for most of us the cost outweighs the benefit . If power wasn’t so expensive here (55c kwh peak) , I would rum MH and HPS all the time .

HPS lights emit a broad spectrum, with a large portion of the light being in the yellow and green range, which plants utilize less efficiently. theirs nothing being lost in the spectrum in fact LEDs generally provide a better spectrum with more control over the red and blue spectrum you’ll alway find people that swear the “old technology” is better but if that were true no one would switch to LEDs or they would switch right back the growers still using HPS and swearing its better are likely speaking from anecdotal evidence or they tried LEDs a long time ago when the technology was still catching up and never tried them again even though the technology has surpassed HPS

Photosynthesis Under Green Light:

Research indicates that green light can drive photosynthesis, particularly under strong white light where it can contribute to photosynthesis more efficiently than red or blue light, according to PubMed.

Whatever works.

plants can use green light for photosynthesis, though they reflect more green light than other colors in the visible spectrum. While green light is not the most efficiently absorbed wavelength, a significant portion is still utilized for photosynthesis, particularly in deeper leaf layers and under high-light conditions.

So basically the green hits deeper in the leaf where its basically the only light hitting chloroplast adding some additional photosynthesis kind of like turning on a flashlight in a well lit room technically you made it brighter in the room but not by a significant amount

To be honest if HPS solves several issues and you likem I say firem up. Do you plan on cmh to veg?
I took down my 4x8 a few years back. Used moving light rails myself in it. I quit the bulbs long time ago. Hot as hell here so couldnt control heat for crap.

Hps…. Led….cmh…. Everyone is gonna tell you oh led’s are the best! Or hps crushes harder than anything! It’s all about what works for you! If u need the heat I’d use them! I use both! Led and hps. Switched to all leds last year. Found out real quick that the heat from the hps puts the room right where I need it. Quickly hung 2 hps lights back up. Led/hps/led/hps over a 17ft X 5ft growing area. The plants directly under the hps Lights don’t get much light from the leds but the plants under the leds get a nice mix of both spectrums! I run a C02 enriched grow. So I like my temps up around 85F to start flower. And it just took too long for the room to get up to temperature Without Hps light. It is just my hypothesis but I would say hps grows a more leafy plant. Nothing crazy but more leafy for sure. There are a little more frosty than the led buds. IMO ….. it sounds like you already know what you need to do! @Robinson-Crusoe

I put my HPS in the middle with LEDs on each side at the top and all around, even got a t5 blended in there lol
