Start using DLI

Lux setting

Also please remember that I’m fairly new at all of this and even a blind squirrel gets lucky lol

I had to calibrate it with the charts for each light i have. I have 3 different HLG lights so, what i did was added up each total PPFD’s which came to 2008 max. So i went into the tent and cranked each lights dimmer up to max then held the phone under the lights in the very middle of the tent level with the top of the canopys and got my reading which was about 1600 ppfd. Pretty far from 2008. Dont you think? Its about 20 inches from the lights. I thought it would be higher. But i guess i wasnt under all the lights. It doesn’t let me move it around to accumulate all the light. This was for calibration. I am wondering if i did it correctly.

Okay right now my Kindled x330 is over my clones, my used my lux meter to calibraye the Photone.

I used this to calibrate the app, seems to mach pretty close., my dark hrs where my 650R and my 4500 are can check later. But I actually by calibrating the app found My DLI was 54.1 way to hot for my babies

That was me. I tested it against an apogee 500 at the hydro store (was actually going in to buy one).

There was an open box one and I tested it with 2 different Iphones. iPhone 7 and 10, I believe. Obviously the brand new phone (at the time) was more accurate but not far off from the older phone.

Needless to say, I left without purchasing the meter.

As im ignorant on light meters what parameters should i look for ie: par meter, lux meter or any other types do i need to look at???

OK, I’m still learning this, but they say you only really know it when you can explain it to somebody else. So I’m practicing on you @Audiofreak

Lux measures Lumens. Lumens are just all visible light. Lux meters are used for people lighting, but gives a general idea of how bright a light is for plants, just based on Lumen intensity. This can work if you already know the light is for plants.

Plants don’t used the whole visible spectrum however, and the spectrum of light important to plants (400-700nm) is called Photosynthetic Active Radiation (PAR). So technically there’s no such thing as a “par meter”, since PAR isn’t a metric, it’s a type.

Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density (PPFD, or PPF) is the metric used to measure PAR. More specifically, how many photons within a given spectrum hit an area each second. PPFD is changed with a light dimmer, or adjusting the distance to the plants.

The Daily Lighting Integral (DLI), which this thread is about, is a number standard for a 24hr period of PPFD. The DLI will change based on lighting schedule. A 12/12 schedule will have a lower DLI than an 18/6 at the same light intensity (PPFD), because the sum of light for the day will be less. This makes DLI the culmination of measurements and is the most complete representation of how much light plants are receiving.

None of that tells you which meter to get, but it might help in shopping for one…

Thanks to the wise sages on this forum, now I do too! Little known to me, I’ve been using their “Spirit Level” for years. Who knew?

Par meter! Or quantum meter… Amazon:

Or if you’ve got the cash apogee:

I wish i could… Unfortunately, the app doesn’t work on all phones.

Plus… With lux… You have to calibrate it to your lights… It’s just not meant for plants… As you said.

Thanks. Gonna have to do some research.

@Audiofreak One of the Amazon ones… Had a nice stick to attach the probe to… Another is wireless and the probe stays in the tent…

Many more option since i bought my Amazon meter years ago.

@Audiofreak just use a smart device like a phone or a tablet with the photone app and select DLI, then follow my modified chart that’s posted in the first page. Disregard the apps chart.

@Bubbala well said, just add the piece of what I told @Audiofreak and you can link the thread. Then you can spit this out to anyone asking about lighting.

Well that’s my opinion at least, one of which we all have.

@Growmoredank
Can you help me with calibrating the Photone app. I dont need a diffuser for my type of phone. I have 3 different lights so, i added up all 3 PPFDs stated on the manufacturers specs, for all 3 separate lights. I am using HLGs. Then i punched that into the app 2008 ppfd and run my phone under the lights to try and gather all the light to equal 2008 ppfd, or do just hold it under all 3 lights in the middle of the tent amd wait for the numbers to stop. Im not clear on this.

I am truly sorry…the photone app doesn’t work on my phone… honestly…I only suggest it now because someone will come along and suggest it as an option that is free…but it doesn’t work on all phones.

I know @Nicky might know how to calibrate the photone app. Hopefully…he can help you…it may be under his thread:

I forget…I do have a new phone but haven’t tried the app recently …as I have quantum sensors.

Okay thank you though… no problem. Ill look around. I remembered @Nicky said he signed off for good last month? Do you remember that? It was in your grow journal he posted it. Its one of the last posts.
