I’ve read about germinating in water, in paper toils, and directly in soil…however, as anyone ever tried soaking in water for 18 to 24hrs followed by planting them in soil–even if there is no tap root yet? Would this increase the chances of germination, make no difference, or reduce the odds it will sprout?
That’s what I do soak 24hrs then plant got 4 /5 that popped
Yep, same here. I soak overnight or until they sink, whichever comes first, in a shot glass of tap water with a drop of hydrogen peroxide. I have nearly 100% success. The few stragglers that haven’t popped were sketchy looking beforehand. I feel like waiting until the tap root is out to put them in whatever medium is more chances to damage that tap root. And some say it matters which way is up. The root goes down, the cotyledons go up, regardless, in my experience. I use rapid rooter plugs, and even had one come up out through the side of the plug. Nature finds a way. If you’re doing everything right and some of your seeds aren’t germinating, I’d blame the seeds.
I like to use paper towel method because it reduces the chance of soil or other media changing the ph and killing the seed
I soak until the seed cracks and go straight into soil. I don’t want to risk damaging the taproot and so far I’ve been successful with this method. Just my 2 cents and I only have 9 seeds worth of experience but so far 100% success.
I appreciate all the info. Thank you all very much for your input.
