Just finishing up a 14x14 grow room(7ft height). I have 3 HLG550v2’s (each on meanwell 2100a’s) available for the room. my question is. Will these 3 run a 14x14 consistent or should I add 2 more qb 288’s (or)for this area? @dbrn32
3 of those will not even come close to fully flowering at 14’x14’ room.
Each hlg 550 is good for a 4.5’x4.5’ space, approx 20sq ft.
3 would be enough for 60± sq ft. Your room is 196 sq ft.
Great lights btw.
@Drinkslinger so what what your suggesttion be for adding to what I have for a 14x14?.
I’d rather hear dbrn32’s opinion.
If you want to flower in the entire room, corner to corner, it’s going to take a LOT of light. Not to mention the electrical demands.
If you’re only planning on using part of the room it’ll be cheaper.
I’m not knocking the hlg lights. But in theory it’s going to take approx 10 of those v2 550’s.
@Drinkslinger I get ya. The room will be start to finish. Electrical demand isnt an issue. Just wanting to have the correct lighting for the area while using what I have and adding to it
You could probably use so many LED strips, you could get a massive discount by buying in bulk and building your own. @dbrn32 is the go to source for LED tips.
HID lights will cover that room for a lot less money up front. The electrical load will be a lot higher, but your first run or two will still be less expensive than an LED solution. I’d go with 600w bulbs instead of 1000w, and just use more of them.
I hope you’re prepared for the environmental controls in a space that large. The humidity and heat can be overwhelming.
How do you plan to layout the room? With a room that large you will need walkways to service all of the plants, and it doesn’t make a lot of sense to light the walkways.
@dbrn32 3ft walkway thru center and 4-5 plants each side
I read 8-10 plants in an entire 14’x14’ room. Am I understanding that correctly?
4-5 plants in 5.5x14’ area? Not telling you what to do here, but I would take a good look into how this works out start to finish. From my perspective, you’ll either be vegging forever or have a lot of dead floor space.
Extremely well-lit dead floor space
My flower room is approximately 12 1/2 × 17. I have 3, 4 1/2 ×5
Screens. That room is FULL
Can you elaborate, because that doesn’t make sense? I understand having isles to move around plants. And perhaps ancillary equipment and work surfaces inside the grow area. But you’re describing a canopy that’s 1/3 of the total grow room, if I understand correctly.
Exactly. One could easily double canopy size and still have room to work. May be full as individual wants it, but it’s not full.
ok, wil try to explain better. the room is 14x14 that i am finishing up on. I am only planning on growing 4-5 plants per side to start, 3 sides . I wanted to have 2 to 3ft walkway down the center.I have 3 hlg 550’s to use and know I will need more lighting. I meant to type 12 qb 288’s not 2. The 14x14 room is inside a 20x20 room that is inside a 36x40 heated morton building. The 20x20 room has seperate heating and cooling. I can reduce the size of the 14x14 room if need be or partition it off. Hope this makes makes sense. Right now I am using the 550’s in 4x4 tents and 1 plant per tent and they fill the tents up. Am open to suggestions and ideas
Let’s see some pics of current layout and a top view diagram of everything in the space…
Vents, doors , resivors and anything else that’s in the room as a top view…
Then we can make simple solutions for you layout…
I think peachfuzz has right idea asking for drawing or something of layout. I for one wasn’t clearly understanding. I was thinking 3’ walk down middle of room meant you would have 2 sides each being about (5.5x14) 77 square feet. When you look at like that, seems like waste of space for 4-5 plants.
Let’s say your 3 hlg-550’s will flower a 4x14’ space. You can line them up along one wall and fit 12-15 plants in that area pretty easily. That’s not even using a third of the room. Does that make sense of how I’m looking at it?
Ya , I tend to stuff so much into a small space…
Your minds would be blown…
I’ve seen haha. In this scenario it’s over 4 ft² per plant for 12 plants. That’s not even that bad considering entire space will be on same cycle. Plants could easily be vegged longer/bigger, but who would want 5-6 month grows on a space that large. Would maybe be different if there was separate veg space and and larger plants were shuffled in and harvested regularly.
Any thoughts on the 7’ height? @ggc1962 are you thinking of scroging these?
I’m wondering about a separate vegetative partition? I’m making the assumption that this will be a perpetual flower operation.
