Septoria - safe to smoke?

Hey everyone,

My first grow - outdoors in the Northeast. About 3 weeks in to flower, I ran in to some spots on my leaves - bottom half of plant - brown, almost encapsulated - as things have progressed, some have completely yellowed and fallen off - others have curled tips and just look BAD.

To this point, buds look great - maybe a random sugar leaf, here and there, with a spot. I’m almost certain I have whiteflies, but I’ve also just recently learned about septoria. If my plant has it and I’m now 6 weeks in to flower…

I’m hesitant to defoliate the plant. Will buds be directly infected by this fungus? Would they be safe to smoke? Would a bud wash help kill it when I harvest? I can post some pics if that would help.

I appreciate any advice!

This is how they start - then the spots multiply, leaves yellow.

Like I said, I know I have whiteflies - when I shake a branch, you can see a couple take off.

We’ve had a very wet summer and I wonder if maybe the damage is from a fungus.

These guys will be able to tell better with a whole plant picture too.

Septoria is a form of mold. I wouldn’t smoke it, but that isn’t based on any research I’ve seen. Just a personal choice. I would use it for edibles as the temps used to decarb weed are sufficient to kill any mold. If smoked I would certainly do a peroxide bud wash at harvest. Peroxide kills both molds and spores and doesn’t damage trichomes.

Looks like it could be bugs or sun lensing. Doesn’t look like septoria. To answer your question, yes, if we’re septoria you’d be able to smoke it because it affects leaves and not the parts you consume.

Thanks for the advice.

There ARE a couple spots on a couple bud’s sugar leaves and I DO plan on doing a bud wash (the idea terrified me, but it sounds like folks have pretty good luck, as long as your careful) - trim those out?

I’ll post some pics in a couple of days of how the problem progresses. In regards to pests, the fact that most of my troubles are concentrated at the bottom half of the plant has got me scratching my head. Wouldn’t the damage show up everywhere?

Anyone have any experience with Cercospora - I’ve found several pics online that look a loy like my problem - starting as gray spots, encased in brown… Seems like it’s similar to septoria.
