After you take seeds out of the refrigerator to germinate them. Do you let them come up to room temperature before dropping them in water. Also what is your favorite germination technique for starting seeds
Stick them straight into the water from the fridge. Your emulating winter to spring…
Make sure your soil is 75°F plus. Heres my germ method.
3 parts water to 1 part peroxide(room temp)
Soak seed for 8 to 12 hours. Small taproot should appear.
Plant seed taproot UP 1/2 inch into light premoistened soil.
Once seedling pops soil, cover with clear dome, spraying inside of dome only, NOT the soil. Your seedling gets it water in the air, not the soil. Youll need to spray inside the dome twice daily.
The seed itself doesn’t need to be warmed up, but it’s usually recommended anytime you take a seed container from the fridge, to let it warm up a little so that condensation doesn’t form inside the area where the other seeds are, as that water would obviously ruin them. Of course this would be subject to the humidity levels of your home environment.
I have never gotten a Tap Root that soon. I had a Mephisto Bean soaking for 24 hours with nothing. Now I moved it to a wet paper towel. Had it on a Seedling mat that was over 90° so I think I may have cooked it. It was in a small shot glass of water
The method @ChittyChittyBangin is referring to, is called chemical scarification. It helps scar up the hull, so it’s more soft and aids in opening.
The hydrogen peroxide softens the shell of the seed thus allowing more oxygen to be avail to it.
Howdy
This is how I do it
100% success rate for me , even with seeds that are years old.
What temperature should the water be. I’ve been putting my shot glass on a Seedling heat mat and I think I’m boiling my seed.
When I remove my seeds from the refrigerator to put in a cup of water, I set them out in the sun for 10 or 15 minutes just to wake them up, is it necessary I don’t know, just an old habit. Room temperature on water for seeds will be fine.
I’ve kept my seeds from North Atlantic seed co In my sock drawer the last two months…
Is this okay
