Seeds in my Purple Punch Photo period grow

Last year I grew four Purple Punch plants that were doing fabulous until temperatures in the triple digits. One turned Hermie and pollenated the other three resulting in tons of seeds. I figured it was the heat that stress them out that caused the problem, so I tried an inside grow where I could control the temp. There was no pollination taking place and I confirmed there were no light leaks, but all four plants had seeds. They didn’t Hermie. There were no male flowers or pollen sacs that I could see. There weren’t as many seeds as a pollenated plant would have, but there were way more than I could accept. What else could be the cause?

did you use the seeds from grow from outside?

If there were no males or some source of pollen nearby such as a field of males blowing in and you haven’t touched any pollen then unfortunately it must have Hermed

Sometimes you don’t see the offending pollen sac or sacs, might of happened early then you didn’t notice them as they died and fell off or something.

Pollen takes time to grow a seed, sometimes you can work out the point in the stage it happened. Sometimes you can just look directly upwards from the seeds and you’ll find that rogue male offender, sometimes your just left scratching your head. Work with the strain more to find out or pick another it’s all gravy…

Thanks for responding. No. I used seeds from the 20 pack I purchased from ILGM.

Thanks for your help. Would a 15 degree temp swing between lights on temp and lights off temp be causing them to herme?

No one really knows what causes it, stress of most kinds. Some strains are easier some harder, one day someone might create a Hermie free strain don’t hold your breath though lol

then heat stress from your light being too close is my next suggestion…do you have a light meter to measure DLI…

Could be genetic predisposition.and welcome to the forum :slightly_smiling_face:

Thank you. It is nice to have somewhere to turn to for help. I’ve been growing for only a few years and I’ve been on my own. Made serveral mistakes, but I;m getting better. I got about 1.4 pounds on this indoor grow. of four plants. Nice frosty and solid buds. If it were not for the seeds all would be well. I just started a new grow. Five Apple Fritter autoflowers in a 3x3 tent, and in my 5x5, I have my photo periods.1 Blue Dream, 1Gorrilla Skittles, and 3 Gorrilla Glue 4. Hope to have better results.

No, but I just ordered one since you mentioned it. What should I be checking with it?

I will keep a closer watch for sacs on this next grow. Five Apple Fritter Autoflowers in my small tent and one Blue Dream, one Gorrilla Skittles, and three Gorrilla Glue #4 in my 5x5 tent. I will hope for the best. Thanks for your help.

I’ve noticed my feminized seeds will Hermie before my regular seeds. The way some fem seeds are.mad.eis by intentionally turn a female to male or by pollinating with pollen from a Hermie. Just a thought.

I’ll tell you another story, not here to argue with others it’s only a story.

Sixty five million years ago hemp formed from a distant relation long since extinct and a relative to hops. Common species and plants on the Tibet stepe.

At some point or always the plant Hermed. These herms dominated the whole species as every bad year as well as good they proliferated and spread seed. Biggest failure for pollen to travel from male to female is rain or water, Herms ensure survival when others fail to pollinate.

An adaptation like this is priceless for survival, a deal breaker for a species with separate plants fir each sex.

Now before global spreading every plant has a genetic lineage to this population of Herms There wasn’t a plant that didn’t carry the genetics.

Fast forward 65 million years and nothing has changed. People call it a trait but it isn’t because it can’t be bred in or out and is always there inbred to everything.

The problem other have when describing genetics is there has and never has existed a herm free strain or even plant, we cannot get rid of these genetics and no matter what strain or seed you get someone somewhere has had it herm.

Now I would say few of us hit absolute perfection and few of us choose easy to grow indicas so the prevalence is reasonably high.

When something is that useful to a plant it hard wires it into its genetics and after millions of years it’s not something we can alter.

I got more Herms when I was making mistakes learning, now just a rare occurrence.

What can we do to avoid it, get better, grow the same strain until perfect, pick an easy to grow strain that hasn’t been crossed to high hell.

What can we not do to avoid it, call up a seed bank ask for the Hermie free genetics, use colloidal silver to reverse sex and eliminate it, realise this happens constantly.

To me herm seeds are just normal genetics same as a breeders, I keep em and grow them out, for me rare to get them the seed dosent herm because it came from a herm, probably could create a plant that always Hermed if that was the case.

If you look outside the box you see another opinion but it’s just a story as most will jump at me saying I’m wrong whilst I ask them to prove it and show me some herm free genetics I can mass market to every new grower and become filthy rich and give up growing and exporting bud for a living.

That’s a good story and great explanation @RHarriS1
@shawnsmidebush I had the same thing happen with my purple punch, got seeds and never did find the source and I was looking hard! I chalked mine up to stress from trimming. I may have gotten some pollen on my fingers from a prior grow that had nanners while I was breaking up a bud to roll a joint, but I never did find any sacs on the PP. As well stated by @RHarriS1 any plant can herm in an effort to self pollinate and continue the species. I’m gonna grow some of the PP seeds maybe this year but I’ll plant outside. Look at it as free seeds, but keep an eye out for more herms if you plant them. Good luck and welcome to the best forum for weed growers :sunglasses:

morning @shawnsmidebush here are 2 charts that I have

auto DLI chart

Photoperiod plants

I hope it is this particular strain that is proned to this problem. I justed started a new grow. Five Apple Fritter Autoflowers in a small tent and in my 5x5 I have one Blue Dream, one Gorrilla Skittles, and Three Gorrilla Glue #4. Wish me luck.

I should have joined the community long ago. Thanks for your input and good luck with your next purple punch grow. Let me know if you get seeds. Thanks!
