I got the white widow deal 10 plus 10 , I germinated 4 first only one spouted , germinated 5 more and all cracked open grew a tap root 5 days later no sprouts, I’m not just having this problem with the white widow prior to this I germinated 9 seeds from another breeder only 4 plants out 9, I’m starting to think I’m doing something wrong and I can’t figure it out
I place seeds in a shot glass using distilled water on a heat seedlings pad with towel under and over the pad with a cup over the shot glass they all sink and Crack open with in 24 hours place on moist paper towel till I have about a 1/8 of inch tap root carefully place them in peat plugs with humidity dome
Any suggestions?
Skip the paper towel it’s pretty unnecessary especially since your putting them into peat plugs anyways( it’s also rough on the micro hairs of the seeds to pull it off the paper towel)it doesnt matter if theres no tap root the water has already weakened the shell, make sure the plugs are partially moist before putting your seed in them 1 finger nail deep . Spray your peat plugs 3 times twice a day
Thanks for the advice I’ll skip the paper towel next time , I do keep the plugs moist, though could be to moist? , it’s my first time using the plugs, so I’m not really used to them
I would guess that your plugs are too wet. Many people have made that mistake. Can you squeeze them out before you drop your seed?
And many of us use the paper towel method. I leave mine in the paper towel until I see a root about and 1/8-1/4”. Many let the roots grow longer but I feel they stick to the paper towel when they get longer
Instrad of the plugs try using solo cups with lots of holes at bottom for drainage. Peat pods suck Nd i see alot of ppl have seedlings doe with them. They r no good. Soil or coco in a clear solo.cup to see roots and slide the clear solo in a colored cup to keep the roots away from the light. Can slide the cup out and see root growth this way too.
Edit make sure soil does not get real cold while popping tge seed but make sure it dont get too hot eother
I grow with a coco mix , I was using a coco starter mix in cups I never had issues getting a germinated seed to sprout until this season, so I gave the plugs a try, I germinated 13 seeds between two different seed bins 4 different strains and only ended up with 5 … I’m going crazy
Go back to the coco in cups would be my suggestion. Many folks have issues with the peat plugs being too wet.
I’ve always pre soaked then paper towel, I’ve always used a coco starter mix in in cups, I’ve never had this issue before of seeds germinating and not sprouting I’ve had them sprout and not survive but not sprouting at all is just puzzling me , 5 plants out 13 germinated seeds is not a good ratio imo
Over wet on the plugs makes sense to me , thank you
I think AfgVet gave you solid advice. Peat pucks seem to give a lot of people hard time. Also not sure whatvis in coco mix you’re using, but ever consider trying straight coco?
I use soldering iron and poke a ton of holes into party cup then fill with straight coco. Poke about 1/2" deep hole and drop seed in with tap root up, then lightly cover. Use sterile tweezers or similar when handling. Then just don’t flood it out with water and you should be fine.
Taproot up, my 1st time reading this. Could you explain a touch?
Shouldn’t be. The tap root will right itself and help pull seed husk off. You just don’t want an extremely long tap root, otherwise you have to put too deep. Similar to what AfgVet posted above is perfect, 1/8-1/4".
I had not mentioned that the seeds are all auto flower I don’t normally run them, I’ve heard transplant autos are a no no , so thinking plugs can just be buried with out disturbing roots, any suggestions
Coco peat mix , sunshine #4 is what I grow in , seed starter is coco
This is the 1st time I’ve ventured off from just myself in a very very long time.
That’s y I am now trapped here. So much great knowledge to sponge on!
Did my 1st ever coconut oil last night because y’all gave me the knowledge and know how. Put the woman on her ass😁
Sounds like you did it right
I haven’t worked with peat plugs. Will they degrade completely? If so it shouldn’t be an issue.
I will add though, I’ve seen autos transplanted from solo cup to final home with no issue at all
I would imagine they would degrade or allow roots to pass though just fine , I can just drill auger and bury them , well that’s the plan for the most part
Just get them wet watch them expand tear open top where it’s matted together at tiny opening,
the bottom comes out easy for tap root to do its thing
I would cut that “netting” off before you drop them in their new hole.
Didn’t realize it but I have used them in the past for peppers and that mesh does not break down all that well.
Just cut it before the roots start growing through it
Very true. It doesn’t degrade fast at all.
OK thanks, I’m using 5 , I’ll go back to the old way
