. Night everyone!!!
Great night it sounds like
It’s always awesome when someone you know gets to indulge in your work. Feel good experience.
Would any of you happen to know much about hvac units lol? Specifically sequences/contacts causing the furnace element to stay on after the blower has stopped?
Without knowing your experience with electrical circuits I’d strongly advise you to not go outside your abilities as it could quickly cause personnel and or property damage including death.
If you have experience working with electricity then…
What type of heat is it?
You mentioned sequencer which makes me think it’s electrical strip heat. If so the contact points on a sequencer connected to a heat strip may have welded together, ohm it out to check. It should be open. I would turn off ALL circuit breakers feeding the unit, remove the panels where the electrical heat and any control panel (if applicable) and look for burt wiring or connectors, especially at the ends that connect to any relays or sequencers or wires that have melted together. Or the fan lead on sequencer came off and when tstat turns off heat the fan stops but the heat sequencers’ timing will keep heat on as it’s staging down , roughly 2 minutes.
Thank you for the quick response man! I had a little experience with contacts and such from working on welding machines but no experience in hvac. This is a pic of the stickers on my unit
Also i agree with you 100% i need to call someone im just scared to know what that would cost and if its just that sequencer i belive can swap that out myself. This happend last winter and i ordered a new sequencer and haven’t had trouble since. I did order a fairly cheap one though. Maybe a better brand would help?
I have the breakers to it all off at the moment. Everything works but when the heat turns on i have it set to 72°. When it reaches 72 the blower and fan stop like they should but the element stays on. I can flip all the breakers off, peck that sequencer with a sckredriver and it may work for 3 hours or 3 days and then it happens again.
Been running this system for about 6 years now and ive never had any maintenance done to it. Thought about calling and seeing if i could get an estimate from a local guy to come clean the whole thing out. If that sequencer is the issue though id like to replace it myself to save on labor. Probably best just to let him do it all lol. Thanks again man!!! Im sure its different everywhere but what does the average cleaning and tune up run in the south you think?
AMEN to 1st paragraph! DAMN can hear my dear old dad saying A MAN knows his limits!
I’d say if you tap it and it starts behaving then it’s bad. Loose connections at any point in that circuit can lead to premature failure, so can a sucky part. White Rodgers is what the parts houses I go to sell. I see em on Amazon too.
Push-on connectors can be tightened by removing from terminal and ever so gently squeezing it very slightly, or just replace the connectors that seem loose.
Here is the Manual
for that unit. Page 6 has sequencer test procedure.
I don’t know what they charge for residential service,
I work commercial but I’m not involved in billing I think our standard rate is an arm and a leg with an option on your first born. Lol
I’d call around and ask what they charge before deciding. Some company’s expect techs to generate sales from maintenance inspections , some recommendations may or may not be valid. Cleaning of indoor and outdoor coils are something owners can do to maintain capacity and head off some problems.
Yep emergency repair procedure #1 give it a good wack!
Thanks man! I downloaded the manual. I really think replacing that sequencer will fix it. Im gunna looke for the brand you recommend and order one. I will try pinching the connections in the mean time and see if that gets me by till the new one shows up.
Any tips for cleaning the coil and the little water tray around the coil? I dont wanna clog it up. I need to take a shop vac and suck out the drain pipe outside. Ive seen alot of slug come out of it before.
With electricity turned off.
Indoor coil, shop vac face (brush attachment works good) then just water between fins, careful or it’ll go everywhere.
Drain pan: With shop vac drawing from pan or attached to drain outlet outside, flush pan from furthest points away from drain opening. After it looks clean Id add a couple of pan tablets to slow algae growth in drain pan and line. Search AC pan tablets.
Outdoor coils, garden hose with nozzle against coil face until water passes through coil easily spraying out the other side of coil.
As a precaution allow coils to dry at least 30 min before turning power back on.
This won’t help it now but will give the next sequencer it’s best chance at long service.
You could set fan to “On” on thermostat to prevent damaging heat strips or high limit switch. The indoor fan will run 24/7 though but better than damaging other parts.
I was wondering if i could do that till my new sequencer came in. It keeps it cool while the fan is running but it dont take just a few minutes and you cant hatldy lay your hand on the big coil behind the filter. Man i appreciate your help more than you know!! I promise if it gets over my head ill call a professional. Just dont wanna spend a bunch of extra money on something i can fix with a skrewdriver and a pair of needlenose pliers . Thanks again!!
NP bud, good luck and be safe
