Root rot? Overfed? Something else?

What’s up gromies! Ive got a DWC set up in a 2x4 tent. My Bluelab monitor showed my Ph shot up from 5.8 to 6.5 in a matter of hours in the early morning. Weird, so I brought it back down to 5.8 knowing it wouldn’t fix it, but just wanted to see what happened. Well same thing of course except the Ph shot up again at triple the speed as it did the first time.

My thoughts - maybe root rot? Not convinced because they look like gunk up white roots. And they m using the flora trio 10-part feedchart so I shouldn’t be seeing this level of buildup being that I’m not going the organic route. And the plant is definitely growing, quite substantially actually in the last 24 hours. Res temps 65-68, water level 1” below the net pot, and 4 large air stones. There’s no way this can be root rot right? I’m even running Great White bennies at a half tablespoons for my 20 gallons.

I think my ppm is too high, hence the gunked up roots. I did notice a very slight darkening of the leaves, but almost not noticeable. Could just be the leaves maturing into larger leaves, I’ve notice new growth is always a lighter green than the big leaves.

Sorry for the long winded post, but basically I think my ppm is too high. However, that doesn’t explain the insane Ph spike to my knowledge. Changed my res, lowered my ppm, added H2O2 on the off chance it is root rot, and FloraKleen to help remove the buildup on the roots. What are your thoughts?

This is a 24 hour difference. Before the spike and afterwards.

Roots

Bluelab chart from last 24 hours. Swapping the res with a lower ppm with the H2O2/FloraKleen seems to have stabilized the Ph for the time being.

@Myfriendis410 Yeah I have that chart but static ppm, rising Ph and falling water level says to keep doing what I’m doing. Ph going from 5.8 to 6.3 in an hour and a half tells me there’s something very wrong happening so I’m definitely not gonna keep doing what I was doing lol. I interpreted that solution on the chart meant for people who’s Ph is rising slowly over time and not as quickly as my was rising.

Just spit ballin, have you calibrated your guardian lately?
Odd spike for 1.5 hr :green_heart::metal:t2:

I’ve found that if you deviate from the published recipe you may have an unstable mix. Higher TDS can also resist PH swings due to the higher salt content. Having a large standing rez will also help.

Are you using R/O?

@peachfuzz , any thoughts?

@Myfriendis410 Ppm was pretty strong, around 700. I felt that was a bit much but went ahead and tried to just follow the feedchart and see what happens, and sure enough my roots have too much buildup now. That wouldn’t explain why why the Ph went up .8 in an hour, it’s so confusing. Didn’t deviate whatsoever either, I’m pretty ocd about it tbh

Just using tap but my tap is only like 30-50 depending on the day

I know you said that you were feeding a 10 part nutrient regimen…
What is the 10 part exactly… ?
Curious about root staining…
Not really seeing anything that would have me worried personally…
In vegg , i really don’t worry too much about any parameters other than not having my humidity run over 70 for any real length of time , just for mold purposes…
But as far as the plant’s go , they can take a pretty serious beating in vegg and can usually be saved from anything other than a bug or mold issue…
Being in a 5 gallon bucket like you are , it starts to get pointless to pay to much attention to things drifting and more about how often your refilling and completely adding a freash new batch of nutrients …
You would have alot more control over drifting and monitoring, if you moved up to a tuff tote for more water capacity…
I try not to chase anything unless i can actually see something of real concern…
I would be around 300 ppm for a plant that small myself…
I think your plant looks good…

I’m in a 27 gallon storage bin from Lowe’s. But the ph going up almost 1.0 in an 90 minutes is insane, there’s no way that normal. I’d use a whole bottle of down if it was. I really am starting to think that I just put too much too soon but the rate it spiked was just so alarming lol

Here’s my feedchart

I didn’t realize that you were in a tote… :slightly_smiling_face:
How long was everything stable before it went unstable…?
Is this the first time that this has happened… ?
