Risky to put plant near a compost pile?

I just started a compost pile mace of chicken manure, wood chips, straw, chicken feathers, fish scraps, and grass. There is alot of fish in the pile so it is stinky and attracts some bugs. Also could attract animals. I could put it in a pot far away from the compost pile. But near the compost pile it is a good spot to dig a hole and fill with super soil. Thing is I’m not sure whether chicken poop and fish composting nearby (15 feet away) could cause the plant to become diseased or something. Idk if it would attract deer but there are deer all over our property, people come here to hunt so that just is what it is.

Thoughts anyone?

Thats a lot of dead fish Id be more worried about large predators and scavengers coming onto my property.

We live on 90 acres of land and the compost pile is about 100 yards from ths house. If anything smell is a bigger issue, even at 100 yards away sometimes the wind brings us a pleasant smell of rotting fish. It is a fuck ton of fish so even 100 yards wasn’t quite enough to keep the scent away but it isn’t too bad. Standing next to the pile is nauseating.

Coyotes and such come into our yard regularly. I live on a dirt road in the middle of nowhere. A bat the size of a basketball flew into my windshield the other day and i almost hit a deer pretty much every time i drive up the street.

I do agree it will attract the coyotes and foxes but do you think they will mess with my plant?

They won’t bother the plants. But I’d be concerned about bringing skunks into the area with that large of a pile.
They WILL dig up the plants chasing grubs and such.

I’m not too worried about that as i think they would go for the pile, not the plant. The plant will be about 15 feet from the pile. I have seen animals dig holes in my soil after I add coast of maine plant food or coast of maine lobster meal (both contain lobster). But usually it’s just a small hole or two and the plant is fine. Once they realize there is no lobster then they leave.

Another option is doing it in a 25 gallon pot about another hundred yards away. I would dig a hole and bury the pot at least halfway in the hole to prevent the pot from overheating.

I have skunks in my yard almost every night they’ve never messed with my plants. They are known for killing chickens once in awhile.

Based on the information here it doesn’t seem TOO risky. I think the biggest risk is pathogens blowing from the pile onto the plant. I’ve noticed that cannabis is much less attractive to wild animals than most other crops - such as tomatoes, kale, broccoli, cabbage, corn, etc. The past couple of years I used zero fencing in my garden - my vegetable plants sometimes get eaten but the only thing that ever munches on my cannabis are bugs. And after 3 days no animals have messed with the fish pile, which I find very surprising. So I figure I will take the chance with this spot.

I do have a flock of chickens but only free range them when I am around to supervise and the chicken coop/run has a perimeter of fencing and cinder blocks around it to prevent anything from digging under. Both the coop and run also have a roof to prevent hawk attacks (and rain/snow). It is like fort knox. And surprisingly no predators have ever attempted to dig under the fencing in the 4 years that i have had chickens. Many peoples chickens get killed by predators all of the time. I suspect it might have something to do with the fact that I piss near the chicken coop on a daily basis, marking my territory (animals do respect territory to some extent). I also have a very strong presence, walking around outside all the time - the predators know who i am.

Occasionally a hawk tries to swoop down but never reaches the ground. It sees me running towards and screaming at it while pointing a weapon towards it. The hawks always fly away. As soon as the chickens notice the hawk they all scatter like cockroaches under sheds, trailers, etc and all you can see in the yard is me and the hawk, leaving us to do battle together. But the hawk is never courageous enough to fight me.

So I did end up putting that plant near the compost pile and I created a thread in Show Your Grow for monitoring her progress and will update it weekly.
