hi everybody first post here. hope someone can help me with a reliable technique to pollinate my female plants with male pollen. how do i make shure only let’s say one bud gets pollinated?how do i isolate the male from the females until they are ready to pollinate? and when is the ideal time for pollinating?
i’m thinking you will have to designate two plants for this process…lol
i may be wrong…male and female
only way i have seen just one bud having seeds is a hermie or something like that…good luck and this is JMO…
thats obvious. i have several fem. plants and one male they are growing in the same garden and i was wondering if there is a way to get seeds without having all the buds full of seeds. it’s just a little homegrow and i would love to have my own seeds. for the satisfaction of having my own strain lol. as well as not having to buy seeds every year. sorry if im offending any professional breeders im sure you will survive with a customer less lol. from my experience with gardening, seeds that grow on your land are better adapted to the environment they come from. i guess this applies to Marijuana as well. but I’m no expert. just a passionate gardener. thanks for any helpful advice on how to achieve this…
I hear you can use a qtip to rub the swollen sack and and rub the bud site you want to have seeds and it will
You don’t need to do anything. You’ll get all the seeds you want as long as you don’t want any buds from the female plants.
yeah thats exactly what im worried about. im wondering if there is a technique to isolate the male so he won’t pollinate all my buds.
@Usmcjojo grows his own seeds. He might help, but I don’t think it is anything that can be accomplished outdoors. Maybe if a tent was inside with the male, and you physically brought the pollen to the plants?
I do know this. You will have to spend the time maturing the plants anyway to get the pollen, then the seeds, and unless it is isolated, you won’t have any females you can count on to make smokables.
Keep the male as far away from the females as you can. Collect the pollen in a plastic bag. Place plastic bag over bud/buds you want to pollinate and give a bit of a shake. Carefully remove and bingo. Or yes if you want to even more specific collect pollen in the bag but use a qtip to transfer pollen to the bud.
Correct. but if both the male and female are setting out in the yard, you’d need a pretty big yard for them not to pollenate.
I’m trying to get some seeds also with my outdoor grow. My male produced flowers way back in May and I saved the pollen and stored it in a cool dark area in my garage. When my plants starting flowering I used a small paintbrush to wipe pollen on the pistils. My outdoor plants are in pots so I was able to bring plant I wanted to pollinate in garage while I did it so I wouldn’t accidently pollinate the others. I think the male plant was an auto because it flowered so quick but grew really fast and had a real strong smell to it. I think I was succesful because the pistils on the buds I hit seemed to retract into plant. The ones I didn’t hit are growing normally but maybe a little stunted. I wouldn’t leave a male plant near your ladies unless you want a lot of seeds and not so great smoke.
Heres the bud I tried to pollinate.@Whodat66 is correct there is no possible way to do it without having a seperate enviroment for the male. Pollen is very potent you have to keep it in its own enclosed environment. When I open my male tent I have to turn off all fans at least 15 minutes prior to opening its door or pollen will be every where. You have to treat the pollen tent like a science lab and keep seperate clothing just for the pollen tent. ALWAYS wear long sleeves and a hat or you will pollenate any branch you brush up on because the pollen will stay stuck on your hairs like a bee. Heres a video for a technique I use. Pollinate cannabis
About the only thing you can do without isolation of the male is wate for him to start flowering and cut some branches, put them into plastic before you snip the stem. Break open a few pollen sacs and colleCT the pollen apply it to the buds you want with a qtip. Of course this is not full proof trying to catch the male at the right time before he pollinates everything but his pollen still has to be ready. If they are in pots I would just take a male and female plant and take them somewhere they are not going to affect the other plants and just let them do their thing
thanks for all the useful tips and advices. as i can’t isolate the male atm i just took it out put it in a plastic bag and put the plastic bag over one bud. i hope im not too late and he hasn’t pollinated all my buds. how long does it take to see some difference in the bud that mightbe pollinated? what are the general indicators of a pollinated bud? so many questions so little time. harvest i arround the corner. its going to be a great winter hopefully with only a few seeds lol
Sorry for the late response, You need to wait until the male is just about to open his pollen sacs and then take a branch or 2 off the plant and place in a jar of water inside the house in a sunny window… The branches will survive for a few days, enough to collect some pollen anyway. Collect some of this pollen and carefully use a cotton tip to pollinate your selected buds on your females… Do this on a calm windless day to minimize pollinating the entire plant. The pollen only needs to be on the buds for an hour or so to achieve success. After an hour take a spray bottle and spray the entire female plant with some plain water, this water will make any left over/excess pollen infertile. You will see the pistills of the pollinated buds wither , turn brown and dissapear inside the now swollen calyx. Congratulations you have now completed a sucessful partial pollination. good luck with your new seeds.
@mountainman1 saved me a lot of typing. Thread the needle time-wise getting a few branches off your male and you can pull it off. The other advice about the q-tip is good or you can put some pollen into a small paper bag, then place the bag over the branch you want to pollinate for a few minutes to all day. Just don’t cook the bud.
I’ve done both. Tricky, but it can be done.
Mayb go to your local hardware store and buy a small home handyman pop up plastic house. One that’s just big enough for the male to fit. That might help reduce the amount of pollen that could reach your ladies. Just another 2 cents from me
… and a light, and a fan…
not going indoors nor greenhouse. but thanks for the advice it’s much appreciated. as the male is out already these techniques will be implemented next season.
Let us know how you go. I got some Durban poison seeds that produced 2 males. Kept him seperate from the rest of the girls and managed to x him successfully with 4 other strains. They say when you cross to different strains for the first time the offspring grow phenomenally “hybrid Vigour” is the term used So I can’t wait to try them out
