PPFD for Seedlings

Hello, I just got my grow room set up and was taking readings with my PAR meter.

Does 400-500 PPFD sound good for the seedling stage?

What I have read is 200-400 for seedlings.

I run mine at 300

400 is a little high if they are true seedlings…I have done it before.

@Bamarayne @Firstimer1299 @Riskguy Perfect! That’s very helpful, thank you.

Looks like I might be able to fire up the equipment.

Would a temperature around 65F be significantly detrimental for growth?

I have a space heater on the way but it will take more electricity than all the other equipment combined.

Any advice?

I think you will probably be fine
Are those light on or light off?

That’s light on with the probe about 2 foot away from the light.

Light off is about 63F.

I was just reading that sugars don’t move well through the plant at less than 68F.

Maybe I can turn up the central heat and not have to use the space heater.

63 is kinda low , we are in the same situation I too use central heat to heat grow room or temps would be too low
I can keep the grow space light on at 70/72 light off as low as 65/68

68 or a bit less is fine for light off

Ok thank you for the advice.

I’m wondering if it will be cheaper to bump up the central heat versus using a space heater. I guess I will have to test it out.

My grow room stays around 75° but 65° is also acceptable. I definitely would not go any lower.

Once you fire up all of the equipment the room will warm up significantly.

I have two pumps in my reservoir making heat in the water. My chiller cold the water to 65° and heats the rooms at its pleasure. I have 1400 watts of lighting in there and keep it nice and toasty. Heck, even the two exhaust fans are making heat.

So, i wouldn’t worry too much about it being too cold, unless you’re growing in the snow lol.

But, your room may be different.

My advice. Set up everything and let it all run exactly as you would during your Veg grow. Let it run for about 5 to 7 days and keep track of your temps and humidity as well as your outside tempos and humidity. Oh, and keep track of the lung room as well. Humidity will increase at night, especially during flower.

All of that data should tell you what you need to know about what you’ll need.

Short story. I thought i was going to be fighting the cold since my grow room is in a basement underground. Turns out it gets to hot and i needed a chiller. I was actually contemplating buying a large aquarium heater. Glad i didn’t waste that money.

Very good insight. Thanks for the help. I guess I haven’t run everything with the grow room closed up.

I’m sure I can get it to at least 65 with lights off, maybe more. I’ll increase the central heat a bit and do a test run with equipment powered on.

It gets really cold here in Minnesota in the winter.

Current grow I germinated in paper towels, then:

Planted in final soil pot with domes 24/7 ~250ppfd/20DLI
D1 - No domes 18/6 ~250 ppfd/16DLI
D3 - Leggy seedlings, so ~400 ppfd/25DLI
D11 - Doing good, so ~500ppfd/32DLI

Soaked 1 x SSH and 1 x Blackberry Kush overnight on the heat mat and the Kush sprouted already.

I planted them in some starter pots this morning.

PPFD is about 255

Still need to adjust the RH but I have time while they’re domed.
