Good morning all,
Just started this grow and my seedlings are about 9 days old. I started them in quart size clear containers so I could monitor the roots. Thought that was a good idea but I noticed what looks like green algae growing on the inside surface of the containers.
Next time I think I will cover the clear containers with something light proof that I can slip off and check the roots every now and again.
But, what is the best way to address this now since it has already set in?
So I would mix one tablespoon H2O2 per cup (8 oz) of distilled water?
I am guessing that will also kill of my mycorrhizae too, think it will come back? I will be inoculating when I do my transplant to their final containers.
Can you put the clear pot in a slightly bigger dark pot? That will help stop light from reaching the soil under the surface level and the root system.
Yes, I can do that. So once the light source is cut off the algae should die on it’s own?
I’m not real sure. I know diluted H2O2 is sprayed directly on the plants and buds for mold and mildew issues, so you may still want to use that. Maybe give a good soak til runoff after and then put them in the dark pots. If you use the dark pots as a sleeve for the clear, then it will help as a preventative, not really a way to get rid of it. This is one of my girls a few days old. But same concept. Planted in coco in a clear cup, then slipped into a red cup. Clear cup to check the roots, red cup to protect roots and medium from light. Of course, drain holes in both containers…
Nice! Great idea. Seems like the more I learn about growing the more I realize I have lots more to learn. Thanks!
No problem. What soil/medium is she in?
And trust me, I’m nowhere near as experienced as half most growers here. I’ve had great help along the way. Everybody on this forum wants everybody else to succeed!!!

Sorry reading up on quantum sensors
I did a 50/50 mix of fresh ocean forest with depleted ocean forest from the last grow. Maybe that wasn’t a great idea either, just was afraid the soil being too hot.
And yes, this site is awesome! Everyone is great and very helpful. I wouldn’t be anywhere near as successful as I am now with all this wonderful help.
Gotcha… if you discover anything good about the quantum sensors let me know! Thanks again.
Nothing other than the tsl2591 you told me about seems like the best option.
Parts should be in today - Monday, then the fun begins. Microcontroller gets here today so I can fiddle with it a bit and dive into Arduino
I know Coco you can wash and rinse and reuse. I wouldn’t think it a good idea with FFOF since there is still going to be a lot of stuff that didn’t come in it, but if she’s growing, then something is going right! Just keep an eye on her. Good luck and happy growing!
I just pull plant n replant into old coco. add a high dose of cannazym
Idea is dead root growth will get broken down into useable nutrients by cannazym and first few weeks will be fed thru that process @Borderryan
Yah as much as it sounds like a good idea to use clear containers for seedlings but unfortunately u get algae the only way u can stop that is to rap a dark cloth or something around the container at the very start when u put ur seedling in coz at least then i still can check on the roots by unwrapping it to check and then u wrap it up again
Awesome… you are in for a fun journey!!
Thanks everyone for the help! when i get out later I will pick up some H2O2 to treat with. And cover up these clear containers!
Happy growing, we’re here if you need us
Thanks, and reach out if you need me on the other…
