Portable A/C BTU's?

im thinking ahead into the warmer months coming.

i havent needed to lower temps at all yet. but thats with ambient temps rather cool.

in a 10x10x6.5 tent, with the tent outer surroundings being 80’ish. as opposed to 50-60’ish it has been…
…how many BTU’s am i going to want?
i figure i might need to lower temps between 12-18 degrees Fahrenheit.

8,000 BTU can do that?
or am i looking at 10,000 or more?

Edit: furthermore…would it be wise to get a higher BTU even if not needed? would it lower the cost of electricity, due to it needing to run for less duration?

5000 BTU should take care oyf it.
The size of your space determines how much cooling capacity you need. Air conditioners range from 5,000 BTU, which can handle about 150 square feet, to 12,000 BTU, enough to cover about 550 square feet. Naturally, air conditioners with higher capacities have higher price tags. Lol

interesting.
so 10x10 = 100 Sq ft.? right? im a lil baked heh

most portable ones i see are about $300 for 5,000-8,000 BTU
how about those air “coolers”?
you know, the ones you fill with water and has some sort of blower/fan inside. those work in grow room/tent?

they are about half the price. but i wonder if they are even half as effective.
something like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-CSO71AE-Indoor-Portable-Evaporative/dp/B008UHXPD4/ref=sr_1_2?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1457235629&sr=1-2&keywords=portable+air+cooler

i saw better ones with greater capacity and timer and stuff. but same concept.

that is what would be referred to as a swamp cooler in a grow room I would call it a mold spawning factory

An evaporative cooler raises humidity recirculates moist air and dust through a wick or wet filter this in turn can cause major mold issues. The nice thing about most portable ac units is they also work to dehumidify and if you add a filter they can reduce some air borne particles if you aim to save a buck getting an appliance which can do multiple jobs and spending on it once is the way to go imo.
If I buy a tool I want it to last years not have to replace it often so you get what you pay for

mold factory is out lol

thanks man.

Hey Donakd how ya been

Ya i had one that did multiple jobs but it quite on me right in the middle of summer last year right when I needed it the most.

Butbya it will cost me but like you said…you get what you pay for

Lol

I happen to do HVAC work on the side with a couple of friends that are journeyman so when summer temps roll around I just invite a buddy over he will tell me what is most cost effective as well as design my install. I’ve been around Will just getting ready to start my roofing season we purchased new company truck so had to lift deck off old and new one and move everything around should be setting up on first roof of season this week. It will be nice to get back to work the added income makes my upgrades and plans far more doable sorry to hear about your CT you hang in there.
Experimenting with air cloning and almost have my flower room down to low enough numbers to get my mites under control trimming the 9th of my 10 pk seedlings today which drops my flower room down to 9 plants another 2-3 weeks will be down to 2. That will be when I decide how bad my mite problem has gotten and if it is treatable or not hate the idea of culling lb of good bud but if I can get another 3 weeks would all be oil worthy

If I recall I’ve seen 5000 BTU units for around a hundred bucks, and you could probably pick a used one up for half that

True! Portable air conditioners help us to improve the air quality in our house. Recently, we also purchased a new portable air conditioner and the main problem we faced during its set-up was venting. They are the best option to keep cool in summers. We cleared our confusion about the BTU’s by consulting a cooling company NJ expert and they guided us well.

Hello @MartinGottfried
I’m a Commercial Hvac guy for the last 25 years here in NYC and I do like the idea of portable units they do have there own set of draw backs
I have found the best and most efficient portable units to be the dual vented type
Being that they pull air from outside with one tube to cool the condensor coil and reject the heat out the house with the second tube
the single tube types pull air from room itself and are much less efficient since they will always pull warmer air from other parts of the house into the room being cooled
In most case where they are single tube type a standard window Ac is a better option if you can use one
If I can be of any assistance in the future tag me and lol be glad to help you out
:v:And Happy growing

Good point but price diffeeence between single tube and dual tube is???

What you save when buying it you spend while using it the single tubes will run a lot longer and more often then the dual but if up front cost a concern feel free to buy the inexpensive model
You’ll pay more in the end in just electric cost
