Sometimes males will show earlier than females. And @Caligurl is trial a system for earlier detection, tagging her for explanation
The method I’m testing is still in the works (trial and trial LOL)
What I’m looking at are the stipules. I believe (take that for what it’s worth) that how the stipules start changing COULD indicate sex.
I THINK that stipules that are closer together and/or start growing towards each other are female. Male stipules look to grow apart (think ladies with their legs crossed and men with their legs apart).
This photo was a hermied plant (so both pics from the same plant). The branches that showed male flowers vs the branches that showed females. Female on the left, male on the right. You can see the female stigmas on the left and the male ‘balls’ on the right.
Now, the branch on the right USED to look more like the one on the left but, as it grew, started spreading apart.
OK, so if I had seen a pic of it 1 day earlier, I might have identified it before the balls showed. That being said, like @plumbdand said “you are checking your plants at least once a day, right”?
It can happen that quickly.
That’s why I’m eager to watch my own plants here soon and not rely on someone else to take the exact pics of the exact area every single day… possibly twice. I’m actually even thinking of doing a time lapse… I can single them out pretty quickly by sending leaf samples to Farmer Freeman for sex testing, then I can isolate the male and compare the two time lapses.
Very interesting. Great work on that. I’m also taking pics daily of some plants and looking for differences. Being I’m a new grower it’s all new to me.
Does anyone have any experience with indoor plants and letting them get some sun sometimes vs led’s all day? Of course indoors by a big window facing south here in Ohio. I would leave them in the sun all day but my cats would eat them?
Many indoor growers do this. Some even take them outside when the weather allows.
I don’t personally do either. Different growing styles for different growers.
I always take mine out for a sunny day, but mine will be going outside full time anyway and it helps them get used to the sun. The only worry is bugs. You’ll get bugs and if you bring them into your tent it can be an issue. Now, if you have small pop-up green houses, you could throw them in there but make sure you lay down a towel, then the plant, then the cover.
I wonder if the results of doing this have shown to be beneficial other than not having to run LED’s? Taste, faster growth, bigger buds?
Good question. I have never done any testing. I would not expect any measurable difference other than a slightly lower electric bill.
My husband built a frame for a tent out of used 2x4s ripped to 2x2’s. We covered it with Visqueen and lined it with an emergency blanket that is of course very shiny silver. The lights were my biggest expense. About $150 for both lights. Pots are from Walmart, under $7 each. Organic soil from Walmart. I already had Ph, moisture, light, and fertility meters. Had a little fan. Doesn’t have to cost hundreds to grow pot. Its a weed! Good luck.
I’ve heard the bud is more potent with a longer lasting buzz if sun grown. Don’t know if it’s true?
That is possible, I have never heard that.
Our local dispensary started selling sun grown but I haven’t tried it yet. In Ohio it’s all indoors for the most part.
Man spreading is a thing in cannabis too.
I’m gonna check this out with my grow, and I’ll post the photos and outcomes on my journal , more evidence for research
Crap shoot. The cannabis grown in most ideal conditions will be the most desirable. This will have more to do with where and by whom it’s grown outdoors vs the indoor setup and skill of the indoor grower. There are places in the world that are nearly perfect for growing weed outdoors and cultivars indigenous to these locations will especially thrive in them. There’s also places in the world that cannabis will never grow to maturity outdoors and would make trying completely useless. Most of the people here are somewhere in the middle and this will have a major impact on how successful outdoor grows are.
My experience with outdoor growing is not very good. Roughly half of my potential harvests were thrown out for bud rot. Others damaged by animals and insects and even one grow stolen long before it was ready to harvest. Needless to say I haven’t messed around with outdoor growing since. There are obviously people in different climates, locations, and doing different things that are very successful too. Just beware that your experience could be vastly different than others.
Growing weed cheaply isn’t terribly difficult. Growing a lot of really good weed cheaply is probably more of a task. The people who are really good at this usually have a ton of knowledge, ingenuity, and are very resourceful. The rest of us make up for any of them by throwing money at it. I’ve seen successful indoor grow setups that people made out of things they had laying around and pulled out of the trash. I’ve also seen indoor setups worth $1,000 fail to get plants to harvest. Same with outdoor grows. Buying organic ammendments can get expensive. Making them takes equipment that will also cost money albeit cheap in the long run and will also take time and some knowledge. Synthetic nutrients are cheap and pretty easy to use, but will have some tools needed that also cost. Pesticides will cost money which you may need inside but you will almost certainly need outside. And the better equipped you are with this stuff will ultimately be a major contributor to your success.
Bogleg isn’t here anymore but he posted something maybe 5-6 years ago that stuck with me. He said that wanting to grow weed led to him moonlighting as an electrician, plumber, carpenter, and a chemist. And that was coming from a guy who had the resources to pay. There is definitely a balance of cash vs knowledge, and if you’re short on one you will need to make up for with the other.
Here is a pic today of one of my plants that was in dirt Dec 25th 23. I don’t know what kind of seed it is. This is still in veg. Does this look right?
As far as i can see looks alright
Right on… Same here… Got "f"ed by a dealer on 3oz zkittles… Was so immature I got nothing out of it tasted like plant.
Bought a bunch of vivosun equipment and some Amazon purple lights/heaters.
If there is one thing I’d recommend… Like a house… Certain things are most important… Roof and walls… That would be lights for plants… Save… Spend on the correct lights… It’ll save you money.
I bought my crappy lights only to sell them, luckily, for half what I paid. Same with the rest.
Cheap fans can catch on fire… I haven’t had it happen… But vivosun years ago stopped selling oscillating fans for tents… For a while… due to failure issues.
I try to go simple… For me less work… Jack’s 321, along with epsum salt and silica. For soil Roots Organics Original… They are a great combination. Soils not too hot.
@ohionw if you ever have questions about growing outdoors, just ask! I start indoors but put out mid May. I’m learning alot about pests and this last grow I had very little bud rot.
