As far as LST tools are concerned, I’ve used a lot of stuff: pipe cleaners, electrical wire, plastic 90 degree clips, tent stakes, cut coat hangers and string. Many of them I don’t particularly care for and mostly just use the cut coat hangers.
I was wondering if there were any other creative ways that one might train.
Rubber bands?
Hanging weights?
Springs?
Lassos with harpoons???
I don’t know what else is out there but I am not completely satisfied with what I am currently doing and would like to keep looking.
I use safety pins and pipe cleaners with fabric pots. Can poke the pot anywhere you want and better target branches . I’m sure there’s better options but this is cheap and reusable.
I’ve used the LST clips and solid core medium guage coated wire and that worked well but this grow I wanted to try something different so I got some bamboo cooking skewers and had some cheap pipe cleaners I used with them also.
I also use binder clips on the rims of the bags to avoid poking holes. Though @Aussie_autos made some sweet custom bags with grommets! Which made me think…
But basically I’ll use whatever’s handy, that won’t harm the plants and will do what I need it to do!
The new training I’m doing is nice and symmetrical if you like a neat plant!
This was the final round of training for her. Now I’ll top or FIM the main colas on the top layer and give the lower shoots time to catch up and even off the canopy before the push to flower.
And as much as I strive to not have my feet in any pics that is my toe! UGG!
And if I get hungry after smoking them I can make kabobs!!
edit - This one actually uses the 18" wooden plant sticks from the womans houseplant collection!
That Ethos Crescendo X Grandpas stash is a BEAST!!
In the plant? They’re just stakes they sell for houseplants. We have both 12" and 18" ones.
Aside from the pipe cleaners and binder clips, that both came from Walnutz, the only other things in there are these -
You can find the green ones in different sizes on there too.
I just have the shoots lashed to one and then kind of gently twisted that in the area I wanted it to be and used the other one to keep it there. It’s just stuck into the pot deep enough to hold it in place.
A couple of them I attached them together if the shoot wanted to lean up or down and not stay level.
Next time I think I’m gonna pinch each tip when I tie it down to promote the shoots on that branch - depending on node length. That plant is sativa heavy so big nodes. On an indica it might be tighter but I think this is kinda maximizing my interior sites that will grow decent sized buds.
I’ve got a tent full of plants trained this way!
Too many - but they’re there! LOL!
I just use pipe cleaners when they are small and have started using rubber bands on the plants when they get larger and fasten them down using the pipe cleaners.
