No It Means Chip On Board. These Chips have 100 or more little LEDs on one board. So instead of running 100 1 to 5 watt separate LEDs they have stuffed them all on one chip. @Countryboyjvd1971 Are you making these lights yourself? or where are you buying these COBs

thanks @MAXHeadRoom if i decide to try LEDs imam have to hit you and @Countryboyjvd1971 up for some help :stuck_out_tongue:

@B345T You can spend alot of money on these new LED lights. And just like computers they are coming up with better lights about every six months. So it all depends on how much you can afford and what will work for your setup. But LEDs are the way to go its just people want to compare watts because thats all they know. I am running cheap lights for now because thats all I can afford but I will need to add a good light for bloom.

In honesty @MAXHeadRoom I’m looking to just lower my 600wt HPS ballast down to 400wt and then add say 2 x 300wt (240-280 true wattage) just for the diff spectrums
I love HPS and couldn’t see me making a full switch over not unless the test grow I’m starting soon goes well going to run a 2 x 2 with a single plant and LED only just to watch how they do and from there decide whether to have 2 and keep HPS as well or go 4 and lose HPS altogether but I’m thinking the first idea will be the one for me
and if LEDs are anything like Computers then F!!K that shyt lol i have already spent thousands upgrading my PC every year or so :joy:

@B345T When shopping for LEDs make sure they have mostly red and blue but also deep red and royal blue leds.with a spectrum signature that looks like this

your HPS spectrum signature looks like the bottom picture

This why you dont need as much power (watts) with LED because its not wasting light energy on the spectrum that your plants do not need

i use MH for Veg 250w for veg she looks like this

And for flower i use Suer HPS she looks like this

what I’m trying to figure out is how to add more blue and UVB into the mix

Most of these companies will custom build you a light if you have the money. Im looking to add one more light for bloom. looking at viparspectra V1000. Mostly reds for bloom stage with some blues thrown in

I’ve bought them @MAXHeadRoom sorry for the late reply
I looked into building them and still may in the future since you can get way more bang for your buck
Maybe next winter I’ll give building one a go I’ll have lots of time then lol
I’m in the commercial Hvac trade in NYC so I get busy this time of year bro
You build your own lights ?
Looking sweet @thaproduct22
Hey @B345T if you stay with the 35 - 50 watt per square foot rule when buying leds you’ll be fine and Like Max stated true watts is what matters not listed watts most mfg will list actual watts drawn from fixtures go with that number

@Countryboyjvd1971 I am looking into building my own lights too. Electronic is not my area of expertise so the learning curve will be great. But I love to learn and build stuff and when it all comes together you have something that you can be proud of. So maybe we can work together and build an awesome light this winter

Yeah o hear you i understand electrical theory being a commercial Hvac mechanic in NYC but not a lot about leds lighting systems
I wa just looking for link I had @Aquaponic_Dumme I think it was had sent me links to a guy on utube a while back broke it down to layman terms
I’ll send it to you if I find it
Hopefully Dumme will see this and hook you up
I can’t seem to locate it right now but I’ll keep looking in the meantime
@MAXHeadRoom @yoshi may build his own as well if I remember correctly

I already found him. Its the mau5 videos. I have watched almost all of them. You probably would understand it more than me, but all you do is match your DCV of your leds to your driver if you are running in series or amps if running parallel. something like that. The cost is still high because they are using cree leds at $35 a piece and high quality Mean drivers. Then there are new quantum boards and the list goes on. But Im in for a project like that. maybe we could use chips that are older technology that are cheaper.
and I know there are cheaper driver, but made in China. I think COB would be the way to go for a project like that
