Need advise for LED lights

Question from a fellow grower:

We are looking into finding the perfect LED lights for our operation but we are a little confused about some of the data available for a lot of the lights. Basically we are just wondering if the light below will work for an 8’x6’ op of about 8-10 plants. Outside of that we are just waiting for the seeds to pop, only been about 3 days though. Very excited for what the future holds - thank you for providing such a great service!

You’d need around 6 of those. But there’s probably better options. You should join the forum and you can get more information.

Thanks for tag @garrigan62, I would also agree that joining the group would be an awesome benefit!

You’ll be disappointed with s single light like that in a space that large. Most of the contractions you see are due to the way a lot of lights on advertised. Do not buy into claims that a light will replace hid equivalent without ppd data to support. The photosynthetic photon flux is the total output of light, it requires an integrated sphere to test. Most of the Amazon lights provide a single spot measurement directly under the light. That doesn’t give you the information to calculate light intensity across your room.

It’s only a 400watt light, so you would need at least 5 of them to cover 48 square feet if you’re spreading the plants out for a scrog grow.

The description shows draw power of this light is 390W and replace 1400w HPS, I think it is a lie. You need at least 4pcs of this light to cover 8’x6’. If you want to save electricity, you can use more efficient white spectrum grow bar

Without a doubt.

Hi All,

I sent this original email - thank you all for the insights! Any idea what the most cost effective route might be? We were going the LED route because we thought it was the best bang for the buck but we would appreciate other suggestions as well. Thanks!

Horticulture lighting group, timber lights etc.

Welcome to the forum @manfred! If you need to get anyone’s attention, use their handle with the @ sign in front of it. So if you want detailed grow support @raustin is the Queen! @dbrn32 you’ve already met and he knows lighting!

Here is a link to the diy light thread. It’s long, but highly worth it. There are a number of led builds in there including mine. You may have resources available to you that may make this a handy option.

Do NOT believe what is said about the blurple Amazon lights. Many of us have gone down that road only to come back and do it again, correctly. I do think led’s are the way to go now.

Hello and welcome to the group. Hid lighting will undoubtedly be the least expensive way to get sufficient lighting coverage. The issue there is that they throw a lot of heat directly at your canopy. So in some cases or climates require air cooled hoods and/or for your grow space to be air conditioned.

If you’re shopping a place like amazon for budget priced led panels, just beware. Most of them don’t provide the levels of performance advertised. I assure you, there’s no led capable of matching a 1000 watt hps with only consuming 200 watts. A 2-1 ratio isn’t uncommon, but will be some pretty serious cash to cover a space that large.

Something like ceramic metal halide is another hid light, but quite a bit more efficient than hps. You can grow great weed with a lot of different lights. Even those cheap amazon led panels. Just don’t get buffalo’d into thinking you’re getting a kick as light for couple hundred bucks. You’re just paying for less performance.

Traditional led can save few electricity, I think new led light such as white spectrum light may save more electricity, now not very sure about it. I will keep an eyes on it and will share more information about it here after I saw others growing feedback.
