So I’m just planning my first adventure into growing this wonderful plant and decided on starting off with a 4 x 4 vivosun tent and 2 hlg QB 288’s powered by the mean well hlg-240-c1050a driver. I ordered those along with all the extra hardware needed. I do plan on doubling the lights in the near future as to what’s recommended but trying to get quality to start. Now my things that I haven’t figured out yet are the fans (Is ac infinity worth it or is a regular vent system all you need?)and the soils. Trying to keep things simple and will be ordering the auto flowers off ilgm but debating if I get the whole beginners grow kit? I’ve been doing a ton of reading on this forum and I think I’ve read so much that I’m starting to second guess myself if I’m in over my head
Dont doubt yourself man. With the knowledge from this amazing forum and common sense! You got this! I can’t answer your question fully but for soil try ffhf its organic and has nutes in the soil, since I’m a beginner myself just wanna give some good vibes! Happy growing!
My first suggestion is to run photos instead. With a decent light setup like that with a good tent, running light tight with a timer is a better way to size your plants to the grow space.
I hear this is a great fan if you want quiet. If it’s in an unused room or the garage then not too worried about a bit of fan noise.
Soil is easy; I think media is easier. Something like coco and 1 quart of GH Flora Micro, 1 Gallon of GH Flora Bloom, some Cal Mag and Silica.
In addition to everything else you want recirculating fans in the tent space, hydrometer for monitoring and adjusting ambient temp and RH, a dehumidifier if in a damp climate and a humidifier if in a dry one. Maybe temperature control too. PH up and down, PH meter and TDS meter.
I know you are new to the forum and may not be able to respond right away. No sweat; just tag me like this: @MattyBear haha. Any thoughts, dude?
So with going photo I’m choosing when they flower and it’s a more lengthy grow with more yield?
The tent I think will be in a closet in my room and with going qb I won’t be giving off a ton of heat so I potentially shouldn’t need that running a ton? Inside should be simple fans moving air and the fan and filter is for fresh air? Sorry haven’t done a ton of research on the fan process yet
Here’s my process:
Germinate seeds and stick under low wattage (one QB turned all the way down and a distance above is plenty. In a 4 X 4 I wouldn’t do more than two: my normal footprint is 2 X 4 for the plant. You will likely only need one QB for most of veg and will really only need everything cranked up around peak flower.
A photoperiod plant can be grown (basically) for as long as you want. If you wanted little plants you’d veg for 6 weeks. If bigger then set a target height (factor in transition stretch) and when you hit your target set your timer from 16/8 to 12/12. Light intensity will be ramped up until peak flower (about 5 weeks into actual flower)
Soil is dead easy: especially if you use R/O or distilled, or your muni water supply is low TDS. Coco the same although there are more chemicals dumped in which requires you to PH the solution to whatever medium you are using. Soil likely won’t need anything until flower. Before you buy; run your selections past the growers here and they can weigh in. Might save you an unnecessary expense.
I usually run photoperiod plants 2 1/2 months before flipping to 12/12 and run out about 5 1/2 months per grow. My yields are better than 2 lbs per 3 plants doing this in media or hydro. Soil seems to be slower and not as high a yield although some say the flower is “smoother”.
I think you just about covered it @Myfriendis410, thank you!
Fo sho. @Myfriendis410 has you covered. Welcome to ILGM!
Two hlg qb 288 boards doesn’t even clear minimum forward voltage on meanwell Hlg-240h-c1050a. I suspect there is some confusion on what’s being used here, or maybe the boards aren’t from horticulture lighting group.
Ok so I thought I grabbed it out of a forum but maybe messed up the number? I ordered from their website for the qb288 v2 with slate 2 single combo
That would be proper driver for two 304 boards. The 288 boards have fv about half of 304.
@Citv do you see the issue here? You will either need driver listed above or a different led configuration to run off of the 1050ma driver.
GOOD CATCH!
@WickedAle caught it, I was just assisting lol. I agree it was a good catch though.
I’n out with the wife now but will look kore at the specs in a bit. So I canceled the order on the driver already. So I’m looking at getting the one in the pic?
No that’s driver you listed sorry. You want meanwell hlg-240h-c2100a for two 288 boards in series.
Alright that item is ordered. I should have things Monday to hopefully put up the tent and build the lights and that way I can see what I’m working with. Also do I need a separate dimmer switch or does the driver control that?
My water is really hard but I haven’t tested it yet. I bought the house and there’s a big water softener installed already. Next step test it and see if I need to use R/O?
Now to do some research on photos and see about needs for them.
So I have my lights being assembled today with the right driver thanks to @dbrn32 catching my mistake and my tent is up. I have picked up ffof and am looking for dolomite lime to mix in with it. I did decide to grow out of 5 gallon fabric pots. I’m also going to be picking up the apera ph20 and then using fox farms nutes with general Hydroponics ph up and down. Now… I’m still debating on fan and any recommendations are appreciated!!! 4x4 tent. If I’m not totally decided how soon do I need it before I can start my grow if I have fans inside? Per @Myfriendis410 I’m thinking of ordering the USA pride pack with the LA Confidential, Maui Wowie, and NYC Wowie (diesel) lol I just cut this from their website description. But with that I plan on doing a Maui wowie and la confidential to start. I was thinking to start 4 plants and I could use the 2 qb288’s til they were getting about 6 inches tall before I’d need another pair of those in there? Or for first grow I probably should only start with 2 or 3?
Ac infinity makes a really nice duct fan. 6" should be enough as long as intake air temp will be maintained reasonably. You can start under qb’s, just dim them and keep them up something like 24" or so. Watch how your plants behave and adjust as needed from there.
Sounds like a good solid plan though I would hold off on the dolomite lime unless you really need it. FFOF is pretty well optimized but hot for seedlings. My personal preference is to start my seedlings in coco with distilled water until transplant. Then go into your soil. Others also layer FF Happy Frog on top and FF Ocean Forest on the bottom.
Nutes are unnecessary until flower (so don’t need any vegging nutes). I would also get an inexpensive TDS meter in PPM: you’ll need it.
You can veg your entire grow under those two lights IMO. Once you hit the high intensity demand in mid flower then you will want more light. Like @dbrn32 said: just turn em down so they don’t get zorched.
