My Drying Predicament

Need some advice. Today is day 7 of drying my first grow. Buds are not quite ready as smaller stems still have some moisture in them. However, I am going out of town tomorrow for 5 days so my question is to I just leave em in the tent to further dry knowing that it is likely to over dry or do I jar them now? If I jar them I could have someone burp the jar for me while I’m gone.

What would you do?

Once they go in the jar, you’ll have to take care of them. It’s critical the jars be opened daily. There are other methods, but you won’t be prepared from them. Can you phone a friend?

For me, it would depend on how dry they are. But what I would do to determine that, is to jar them and throw a hygrometer in the jar. If they stabilize below 68, I would leave them and get someone to burp them. If they stabilize at or above 68, I’d spread them out on some newspaper for a few minutes, then try again, and repeat to get them below 68, and still jar them and get someone to burp them.

  1. If you jar them above 68 you may get mold
  2. If you over-dry them in the tent, you will have harsh non-pleasing smoke

Since you have all day to get them in the cure zone, you have time.

I over-dried a harvest a couple of grows ago. The results were harsh, like @newt says. I ultimately threw out the weed.

If a friend can help I would jar it and ensure someone comes by every day to burp the jars for 15 minutes or so.

Thanks all. I think I will go the jar route. Thanks for the tip on the newspaper to accelerate moisture release. Good tip.

Newspaper or also paper bags work great. Maybe time to get ready for the next grow and order some Grove bags.

Desiccant, I have some silica packs placed in jars if they spike humidity right now. While I haven’t used this yet @Hellraiser used damp rid to quick dry samples, don’t know if he has used this to expedite the last days of drying.

Damp-Rid is VERY aggressive. Be careful if you go that route.

Agreed with @Newt, you could calculate the size the recommend and go half. As you’re already far enough along. He mentioned he would check regularly if using it. So if you decide that I’d probably check every hour and pull as they are ready. But others who might have tried this could input more.

This is what I do is this. I take Paracord and remove the ropes on the inside. In about 3 feet sections.

I start stripping the plant in sections and separate each branch off the main branch. So less stems and branches to deal with. It works great for our heat and humidity in South Texas. Its a real pain but versus having up to 1 week longer to dry makes life a living hell. As my drying room is the bathroom.

Haha, that’s where I am drying as well. Didn’t see the point ordering a tent and everything at the moment with an unused bathroom with a vent and no windows.

@PiratedSoldier I do want and need another tent. But I need to reorganize the grow room first.

I actually dried in the tent while growing. Then moved to a closet 3/4 filled with Harley Davidson shirts. I also used empty boxes and said screw all that and use the shower curtain rod to dry. I prefer the bathroom.

I learned through my mistakes long before I joined here. I did some bonehead mistakes in the beginning. :joy::joy::joy:

I am building a grow room but I’m not in a hurry so working on it little by little. But eventually everything will be in there.

First harvest. This was on a low underside cola. Is this still good and worth trimming and curing?

Why not? It can’t hurt.

I only used to to quick dry samples, I would not use to dry the harvest unless I was in a really humid environment that needed some help.

I didn’t imagine you had used it this way, but you’re the only one I know so far that’s used it in general.

I think @Lacewing tried it, and found it too aggressive as well.

Yeah I would be VERY VERY CAREFUL

I used it in a drying box (damp rid)for maybe an hour and it dropped the humidity way too low like under 40
And then I thought I’ll just remove a little at a time

No matter how much I left in there it sucked out moisture at the same rate

You even warned me there’s no way to regulate
Lol
